Wallbach offers two different reasons to spend time outdoors: the Wallbach Valley for hikers and nature lovers, and the “Am Heiligenberg” Woodland of Peace, with guided tours and tree burials. The place name also has a direct connection to the landscape: the stream of the same name flows through Wallbach and gave the village its name. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, consider whether walking trails or a visit to the Woodland of Peace should be the main focus of your stay.

Wallbach and the Wallbach Valley

The Wallbach Valley invites you to explore the surrounding area on foot. It appeals to hikers and nature lovers who enjoy spending time outdoors. You can make the valley a focus of your stay in Wallbach. The stream and the valley represent different aspects of the village: the stream explains its name, while the valley provides a setting for exploring the surrounding area.

The “Am Heiligenberg” Woodland of Peace

The Woodland of Peace is used for tree burials. In 2014, it was the first of its kind in Thuringia. Facilities on site include benches, a memorial area and parking. The woodland therefore combines its purpose as a burial site with a place visitors can enter. A guided tour offers a different focus from a hike in the Wallbach Valley: here, you can learn more about the site and ask questions.

The Woodland of Peace may be entered at any time from sunrise to sunset, at your own risk. Temporary closures may apply in severe weather or during maintenance work; check the access conditions before your visit.

The information board near the parking area is the meeting point for guided tours. Sturdy footwear is required. Forest tours do not take place during storms, thunderstorms or natural disasters. Group tours can be arranged individually. If you would like to learn about the site and ask questions, you can plan your visit to include a guided tour.

In the wider destination of Meiningen

In the wider destination of Meiningen, Elisabethenburg Palace is a cultural focal point. It was built between 1682 and 1692 under Bernhard I as the residence of the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen. Today, the palace houses the Meininger Museen and is an important cultural monument under the patronage of the Kulturstiftung Meiningen-Eisenach. The museum displays works of painting, sculpture and applied arts.

The “Zauberwelt der Kulisse” Theatre Museum is dedicated to the history of the Meiningen Theatre. Its collection includes a stage set about 14 metres long, costumes, theatre programmes and autographs. Alongside stage sets, visitors can also explore costumes, printed materials and manuscripts.

Meiningen has more than ten routes for walks and hikes, ranging from three to twelve kilometres. Along them, you can follow in the footsteps of Johannes Brahms, Ludwig Bechstein and Friedrich Schiller. The different route lengths offer a choice if you prefer a shorter or longer walk. The wider destination’s natural attractions also include Goetz Cave, considered Europe’s largest and only accessible fissure cave.
