Langenorla church is home to almost life-size wooden figures from the 17th century: Peter with the key and Moses with the tablets of the law. The Orla Cycling Route also passes through Langenorla. These specific cultural and cycling connections offer different points of reference when planning a stay.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
The Orla Cycling Route passes through Langenorla. The Luther Trail has a different geographical connection: one section skirts the municipality of Langenorla and was prepared for pilgrims, hikers, and visitors. The two descriptions therefore refer to different levels: the cycling route passes through the named town, while one section of the Luther Trail touches the municipality. Check the current trail conditions before setting out on the Luther Trail.
Church and Local History
The figures in the church stand to the left and right of the altar. Peter is depicted with the key, and Moses with the tablets of the law. These two attributes distinguish the figures; their almost life-size scale and their dating to the 17th century give this detail a specific scale and timeframe.
At the Marienquelle spring in Mariengrund, the municipality of Langenorla installed a wooden bench by the pond in 2017 as a “place for reflection” for pilgrims and hikers. It was intended to give them a chance to catch their breath.
In Langendembach, also part of the municipality, the local history museum offers a glimpse into rural life in the past. This adds a perspective on everyday history to the church art. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
Saale-Orla: Landscape and Culture
The wider Saale-Orla destination has its own landscape and cultural attractions. The Saale, with the Saalekaskade—a roughly 80-kilometre-long chain of reservoirs dammed five times—forms Europe’s largest contiguous reservoir area, known as the Thuringian Sea. The Bleiloch Reservoir is Germany’s largest reservoir. These two descriptions refer to different scales: a contiguous reservoir area on the one hand, and a single reservoir on the other.
At the Hohenwarte Reservoir, the Mühlenfähre ferry connects the landing stages at Linkenmühle and Altenroth. It operates seasonally; check the timetable and crossing conditions before your trip. This makes the ferry connection a specific planning consideration, and its operating dates should fit your travel plans.
The museums in the wider Saale-Orla destination also offer a range of different focuses. Museum Schloß Burgk houses historic living and exhibition rooms with precious interiors, as well as collections and exhibitions. Its bookplate collection comprises more than 200,000 prints and is the museum’s largest specialist collection. Concerts and festivals are also held there; check the current programme for specific event dates.
The Heinrichshütte foundry in Wurzbach is home to Europe’s largest and most powerful steam engine. Heinrichshütte is an interactive museum where visitors can touch and take part, and it warmly welcomes families with children as well as children from daycare centres and schools. The Saale-Orla area therefore offers a choice of different museum experiences: historic rooms and collections in Burgk, or an interactive museum with an extraordinary steam engine in Wurzbach.
