Peuschen’s local history begins with a specific building project: in 1795, Schulze Johann Müller from Laskau built a residential and farm building in the middle of his fields. The later village of Peuschen grew from this building. The year, builder and building provide a clear chronological starting point for the story of its origins—especially interesting for anyone interested in the development of villages and settlements.

Green villages and churches in the municipality

The municipality of Peuschen includes Bahren and Laskau. Both are green villages, with farmsteads arranged in a circle around the village green. Laskau’s village church was built in the 18th century. It consists of a long nave and a massive tower with a tall lantern; a bell dating from 1687 hangs in the tower. Bahren acquired its own church around 1560. The dates provide different historical points of interest: the church in Bahren dates to an earlier period, while Laskau’s 18th-century church contains an older bell.

Landscape and routes in the wider Saale-Orla destination

The wider Saale-Orla destination offers another perspective on water and landscape. Together with the Saale Cascade, which is about 80 kilometres long and has five dams, the Saale forms Europe’s largest continuous reservoir area, known as the Thuringian Sea. The Bleiloch Reservoir is Germany’s largest reservoir. This puts the extensive reservoir area and a single particularly large reservoir side by side as distinct landscape features.

The region also offers options for hiking: Wurzbach has more than 120 kilometres of signposted hiking trails for exploring the low mountain landscape. Near Neustadt an der Orla, the 32.65-metre-high Bismarck Tower is a prominent landmark; the medieval Hohe StraĂźe ridgeway passes right by the tower. For those considering a longer route, Blankenstein is also one of the starting or finishing points of the 168-kilometre Rennsteig.

The cycling routes mentioned here differ in direction: the Orla Cycle Route passes through Neustadt an der Orla, while the Oberland Cycle Route runs from Schleiz to the Thuringian Sea. Check the current route and signage before setting out. A seasonal connection on the water is the Mühlenfähre ferry on the Hohenwarte Reservoir, linking Linkenmühle and Altenroth. Before planning, also check the ferry timetable and crossing conditions.

If you are looking for a single destination rather than a route, consider the Ziegenrück slate fold, a natural monument. The Schleizer Dreieck offers a different focus and is considered Germany’s oldest natural road racing circuit. The wider Saale-Orla destination therefore offers a clear choice between interests in nature and motorsport history.

Museums and culture in the Saale-Orla region

The Museum Schloß Burgk combines historic living and exhibition rooms with valuable interiors, collections and exhibitions. Concerts and festivals are also held there; check the relevant dates if you plan to attend an event. One notable collection comprises more than 200,000 ex-libris prints and is the museum’s largest specialist collection. This makes Schloß Burgk interesting to visitors with a range of cultural interests—from historic rooms to a substantial collection with its own distinct focus.

The Heinrichshütte foundry in Wurzbach is home to Europe’s largest and most powerful steam engine. Heinrichshütte is an interactive, hands-on museum and welcomes families with children, as well as children from daycare centres and schools. Museum642 offers a different approach: visitors of all ages can explore the history of Pößneck on an individual multimedia tour through every floor of the museum. Museum Burg Ranis, in turn, offers insights into the geology of the Orla Valley, the Ice Age and the history of the castle. The subjects thus range from technology and urban history to natural history and castle history.

Archaeology adds another option: Wysburg near Weisbach is an excavation site of an old robber baron’s castle and a destination for an outing. As access details may change, check the current conditions before your visit. The Hydropower Museum in Ziegenrück is described as the only museum of its kind in Germany.
