Langenbach brings together the history of an early village glassworks, its setting in the meadow valley of the Langenbach Valley and the open-air theatre. During your stay, you can focus on cultural history, landscapes and hiking trails in different ways. It is worth taking a closer look at the routes: one trail leads to the village centre, while another circular hiking trail passes through Langenbach.

Glassmaking history of regional significance

In 1525, Hans Greiner from Swabia and his companions founded the first village glassworks in Langenbach, with twelve workbenches. This glassworks is considered the “mother glassworks” for other village glassworks in the Thuringian Forest, including those in Fehrenbach and Lauscha. Its history therefore has a specific local starting point and a regional connection that extends beyond Langenbach.

The term “mother glassworks” encapsulates this connection. Fehrenbach and Lauscha are two of the examples named for other village glassworks. If you are interested in regional glassmaking history, Langenbach offers a distinct cultural focus alongside its landscapes and trails.

Valley, forest and different trails

Langenbach lies in the narrow meadow valley of the Langenbach Valley, at the foot of the open-air theatre. Dense forests begin behind the houses and extend up to the higher elevations. The village’s immediate valley setting and the forest behind it thus offer different landscape features.

The hiking trail from Schönbrunn descends to the centre of Langenbach and the historic mother glassworks. Schönbrunn is outside Langenbach and is the starting point of the trail. The Schönbrunn–Naturtheater Steinbach-Langenbach–Schönbrunn circular hiking trail, which passes through Langenbach, is a different route. These two descriptions help with different planning questions: the first trail leads to the village centre and the mother glassworks, while Langenbach is part of the circular trail’s route.

The open-air theatre as a cultural attraction

The Steinbach-Langenbach Open-Air Theatre is an outdoor stage in the heart of the Thuringian Forest. It has 3,000 seats and a stage area of 540 m². Together with Langenbach’s location at the foot of the theatre, it offers another cultural connection alongside the older glassmaking history. If you would like to include a performance in your stay, check the event schedule in advance.

Finding your way around Langenbach and Schleusegrund

The Schleusegrund Tourist Information Centre can help you plan a trip to the rest area at the mother glassworks in Langenbach. It is located in Schönbrunn, within the broader destination of Schleusegrund, and is certified. Check with the Tourist Information Centre in advance about the specific advice available before relying on it. There is a charging station for electric cars in Langenbach. As operations and availability may change, check the current status before setting off.

The broader destination of Schleusegrund lies on the southwestern slope of the Rennsteig, in side valleys at elevations of 450 to 800 metres. Schleusegrund is one of the most picturesque recreational areas in the Thuringian Forest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Terrassenbad Schönbrunn, with a sports pool, a non-swimmer area with a stainless-steel slide and a toddlers’ area, is also located there. If you plan to visit the pool, check the current opening hours and access arrangements in advance. This lets you appreciate Langenbach for its own valley and glassmaking history, then decide whether other attractions in the broader destination of Schleusegrund are relevant to your trip planning.
