Ronneburg’s distinctive features include the 225-metre-long “Dragon’s Tail” adventure bridge, traces of its mining history and historic buildings. The Neue Landschaft Ronneburg is located in the former mining district around the town. This offers a range of themes to explore as you plan your trip: timber construction, the history of technology, urban architecture and landscape.

The Dragon’s Tail: a distinctive timber bridge

The “Dragon’s Tail” adventure bridge is located on the grounds of the 2007 Federal Garden Show. At 225 metres long, it is one of Germany’s longest and most innovative timber bridges. Following renovations, it reopened on 29 May 2026. The structure adds a distinctive architectural feature alongside the town’s historic landmarks.

Mining history at the headframe and in the exhibition

The headframe of Material Shaft 407 stands at the southern edge of town. It is the only surviving trace of mining activity in the Ronneburg region and is a technical monument. The Ronneburg Mining Association (Bergbauverein Ronneburg e.V.) offers guided tours of the headframe. If you plan to join a tour, check the date and availability with the association directly in advance.

The Wismut*Objekt 90 exhibition covers the development of Wismut: from its early years as a uranium ore producer, through its development into a modern mining company, to the remediation of the legacy of mining. The exhibition therefore looks beyond this individual technical monument to the different phases of mining and how its legacy has been addressed.

Church tower, town wall and museum

Ronneburg’s late Gothic church tower is about 30 metres high, square in shape and topped with an eight-sided crown. It is a landmark of the town. The combination of a square tower and an eight-sided crown gives its architecture a distinctive profile.

Today, the course of Ronneburg’s historic town wall is visible only in a few places. A surviving section near the vicarage, the former superintendent’s residence, is a protected monument. Its lower section is made of rubble stone masonry, while the upper section is timber-framed. This section makes it possible to distinguish the two different construction methods; at the same time, the wall’s course is visible only in isolated places overall.

The Town and School Museum is located in the tower building of Ronneburg Castle and is run by the Ronneburg Local History Association. If you plan to visit, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

The Neue Landschaft and the scale of the mining district

The Neue Landschaft Ronneburg covers about 800 hectares in the former mining district around Ronneburg. Alongside individual architectural and technical monuments, it is a large area explicitly connected to the former mining district. Compared with the individual headframe, it offers a different perspective on Ronneburg’s mining history: here, a surviving technical landmark; there, an area in the former mining district.
