If you choose Weida as your place to stay, you can factor culture, craftsmanship and a special culinary occasion into your travel plans. The tannery explains how sole leather is made; St. Mary’s Church and Osterburg Castle represent different historical and cultural themes. For practical information about restaurants, accommodation and tours, the Tourist Information Office in the Schlosswache is a useful point of contact.

Craftsmanship and culture in Weida

At the tannery, visitors can find out how many steps are involved in turning cattle hides into durable sole leather. The focus is not only on the finished leather, but also on the individual stages of its production. Anyone interested in craftsmanship will find a practical introduction to this process here.

St. Mary’s Church is the former monastery church of the Franciscan Order. Osterburg Castle in Weida houses a museum, a gallery, an artist’s studio, exhibition and event spaces, as well as dining facilities. Weida therefore offers a range of interests to consider when planning a trip: an introduction to traditional craftsmanship, a former place of worship and a multifaceted cultural venue. Before visiting Osterburg Castle, check which facilities are currently open.

Planning your stay

The Tourist Information Office is located in the Schlosswache at the foot of Osterburg Castle. It provides information about restaurants, accommodation, places to visit, and walking and cycling tours. It is a useful point of contact if you would like to plan your accommodation and the themes of your stay together: you can get both accommodation tips and guidance on excursions and tours there. This will help you weigh up culture, activities and your interests when planning your time in Weida.

The Weidsche Kuchenmarkt as a reason to visit

At the 2026 Weidsche Kuchenmarkt, numerous varieties of homemade cake are traditionally on offer. Bakeries, private individuals, clubs and aspiring young bakers all contribute. If you would like to include the market in your travel plans, check the event dates for your year of travel.

Greiz: museums, architecture and landscapes

The wider travel destination of Greiz offers a distinct focus on the history of the princely residence and the textile industry. Since 2010, the Upper Castle in Greiz has housed the permanent exhibition “From the Land of the Bailiffs to the Principality of Reuß of the Elder Line.” It covers the history of the Bailiffs, lords, Imperial Counts and Imperial Princes of Reuß, as well as the associated culture of small-state princely residences. A multimedia historical experience, with a computer-animated account of the building’s history and an interactive journey through time, adds to this historical perspective.

The Lower Castle in Greiz houses a museum and a textile demonstration workshop. The workshop, established in 1998, presents the production and history of Greiz’s textile industry; children and adults can take part in the manual production process. This regional cultural attraction therefore offers a hands-on introduction to textile history as well as an exhibition.

The Summer Palace and Greiz Park showcase architecture and parkland. The Summer Palace in the Princely Greiz Park, on the banks of the White Elster, was built as a summer residence for the Princes of Reuß of the Elder Line and is one of the earliest Neoclassical buildings in central Germany. Greiz Park lies at the foot of the wooded castle hill and is a 19th-century landscape park; the entire complex is designated a national cultural monument.

Walking distances to the Summer Palace are specified: it is 550 metres from the Bruno-Bergner-Straße stop, 700 metres from the Puschkinplatz stop and one kilometre from Greiz railway station. Greiz district is located in the Thuringian Vogtland. Its landscape is characterised by low mountain ranges, narrow valleys with castles and palaces, plateaus, rock formations cut through by rivers, floodplains, rolling hills, forests and cultivated landscapes.
