Langenwetzendorf stretches for about four kilometres along the Leuba. The river gives the village a distinctive geographical line. There are various reasons to visit when planning your trip: the annual Park Festival, the Easter fountain in the park, the outdoor swimming pool in the summer months and the circular hiking trail to the summer bath. What you choose to focus on depends primarily on when you travel and whether you are looking for a tradition, a seasonal activity or a hike.
Season, Park Festival and Hiking Trail
The Park Festival takes place once a year in Langenwetzendorf. If you would like to plan your visit around it, include the event date for that year in your plans. During the Easter season, an Easter fountain is set up in the village park, making Easter a distinct reason to visit Langenwetzendorf. The outdoor swimming pool is open during the summer months. So the right time to visit depends on whether you want to see the Easter fountain, enjoy the summer swimming facilities or experience the Park Festival.
The “Between the Elstertal and Leubatal” circular hiking trail passes through Langenwetzendorf and continues to the summer bath. The route description thus makes a direct connection between crossing the village and visiting the outdoor pool. If you are planning your trip around a hike rather than an event date, the trail offers a different way to experience the village: it leads through Langenwetzendorf to the summer bath, while the Park Festival and Easter fountain are separate reasons to visit.
Nitschareuth Farm Museum and Culture in Greiz
In the area around the destination, the Nitschareuth Farm Museum displays a wide range of exhibits illustrating everyday rural life over the past 200 years. The focus is on social history and the exhibits that bring it to life. The museum offers guided tours with in-depth explanations by prior arrangement. Groups can also book a museum trail, which focuses on selected exhibits: while the guided tour provides in-depth explanations, the trail is designed for groups and centres on a selection from the collection.
Projects, workshops and courses cover historical laundry washing, butter making, old handwriting, an English-language museum treasure hunt, and scythe mowing and peening. These topics offer different ways to explore historical activities and skills. If you are planning a specific visit to the museum, check the current programme in advance.
The wider destination of Greiz offers further cultural and historical attractions. The permanent exhibition “From the Land of the Vogts to the Principality of Reuss of the Elder Line” has been housed in the Upper Castle in Greiz since 2010. It covers the history of the Vogts, lords, imperial counts and imperial princes of Reuss, as well as the associated culture of small-state residences. The museum also offers a multimedia historical experience, featuring a computer-animated building history and an interactive journey through time.
The Lower Castle in Greiz houses a museum and a textile demonstration workshop. Established in 1998, the workshop showcases the production and history of Greiz's textile industry; children and adults can take part in the manual production process. The Summer Palace in Greiz offers another perspective on architectural history: it was built as a summer residence for the Princes of Reuss of the Elder Line and is one of the earliest Neoclassical buildings in Central Germany. Greiz thus brings together the history of princely residences, textile craftsmanship and Neoclassical architecture, alongside the glimpse of rural everyday life at the Nitschareuth Farm Museum.
