Waterfront trails, animal encounters and city history offer different ways to shape a stay in Zeulenroda-Triebes. You could plan your trip around spending time at the Zeulenroda Sea, going for a walk or learning about the city’s history. The sights and trails offer a range of starting points for your plans.

Trails and activities by the water

The Zeulenroda Reservoir Trail is about 45 kilometres long and runs through the Weida Valley around the two reservoirs. 89 percent of the route follows mostly natural paths close to the water. Trail conditions may vary, so check the current route before setting out. At the Zeulenroda Sea, three lidos invite you to go boating, swim and relax.

A shorter alternative with a different route is the three-kilometre Promenade Trail. It runs right along the reservoir shore, is accessible, and connects the Bio-Seehotel on the Zeulenroda Sea with the bathing area on Bleichenweg in Zeulenroda, the Zeulenroda Sea motorhome park and the “Strandhaus da Rosario” restaurant; the businesses and facilities mentioned as connecting points may change. There are ten play and learning stations along the section between the Bio-Seehotel and Zeulenroda lido. The connecting points mentioned may change; before your visit, check which ones are relevant to your plans. Comparing the routes helps you choose between a longer trail around both reservoirs and a three-kilometre route right along the shore.

Animal enclosure with nature trail

At the Zeulenroda animal enclosure, you can stroll along accessible paths, have a picnic and discover animals from several continents in mostly spacious, natural-style enclosures. A petting area offers the chance to meet dwarf goats. A visit brings together different activities, without requiring you to stick to a single circuit.

A nature trail complements the animal enclosure: information boards and models share insights about local nature. If you’re planning an outing, you can combine a walk, a picnic and animal watching with the information along the trail. The accessible paths are also a consideration when choosing the right itinerary for your visit.

City history and Neoclassical architecture

Since 1927, the Zeulenroda Municipal Museum has been housed in the former home of Ferdinand Schopper, a hosiery manufacturer and commercial councillor. Its permanent exhibition uses selected objects to explore defining events in the city’s history, from the town’s founding around 1150 and the granting of town rights in 1438 to the modern era. The city’s characteristic trades and industries are also among the exhibition topics. The museum thus traces a path from early historical milestones to the development of local economic life.

Other museum rooms focus on residential architecture: individual pieces, fully furnished salons and entire rooms illustrate examples from around 1830 to around 1985. In the cityscape, the Neoclassical town hall adds another architectural highlight. It was built from 1825 to 1827 to designs by Zeulenroda hosiery manufacturer Christian Heinrich Schopper (1787–1864). The Neoclassical Church of the Holy Trinity is also a venue for a variety of cultural activities; this does not specify any particular events.

The Carp Piper is a popular photo spot. On a guided city tour, you can learn how the figure at the Carp Piper Fountain got its nickname. This lets you pair a look around the city with a particular story about one of its landmarks.
