Borsfleth can be explored from several perspectives: cycling routes, dike paths and the parish village each offer a different focus for a stay. When planning your trip, you can consider whether cycling, walking, water sports or historic architecture and art should take centre stage. Local activities range from guided cycling routes through meadows and fields to canoeing on the Elbe and Stör.
Cycling Routes, Dikes and Water
The Elbe, Stör and Kremper Au flow through Borsfleth. Guided cycling routes lead through meadows and fields; the Mönchsweg also passes through the village. The 46-kilometre Stör-Törn cycling route runs along the Stör dike through Borsfleth. The 46 kilometres refer to the entire Stör-Törn, not just the section along the Borsfleth dike. Rural walking paths follow the dikes and pass through the Stöpen. Canoeing is available on the Elbe and Stör; the purpose-built yacht harbour is operated by the SSVB. Check the current route before setting out on a cycling tour, as route details may change. Find out about local conditions before going canoeing.
St. Urban’s Church and Village History
St. Urban’s Church was first documented in 1307. Its 40-metre-high tower was built in 1899. The oldest item in its inventory is a Romanesque granite baptismal font. The carved oak pulpit dates from 1638; it was made in the workshop of Jürgen Heitmann in Wilster and donated by the Möller family. An Ecce Homo painting from the former Baroque altar of 1646 hangs in the church. The altar area also features “A Picture for Peace”, a work by Borsfleth painter Kokemüller from 1983. The furnishings thus span Romanesque pieces, 17th-century art and a work from the 20th century. The rectory south of the church is a thatched Husmanshus (Krüzhus) dating from 1816.
Village Scenery and Getting There
At the entrance to the village, the old Verlath lock and its bridge over the Kremper Au mark the transition into the village. One of the last brick-paved roads in Steinburg district runs through the parish village. Borsfleth is connected to the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV). Bus stops in Borsfleth offer connections towards Itzehoe and Glückstadt; rail connections are available from Krempe or Glückstadt. Check timetables and connections before travelling, as transport information may change.
