In Hohenlockstedt, several routes lead into the town’s history: through the local history museum, historic sites of the former Lockstedter Lager and themed routes. Natural attractions and regional produce round out the program.

Local History Museum and Water Tower

The local history museum is housed in a historic pump house next to the listed water tower. It presents the town’s history and Hohenlockstedt’s former identity as Lockstedter Lager. The settlement of the former artillery training ground is also among the topics. The museum also recalls Hohenlockstedt’s traditional ties with the Finnish Jaegers.

Built in 1900, the water tower is considered a symbol of Lockstedter Lager. Visitors can climb it and enjoy views from about 18 meters above the surrounding geest landscape. The museum and tower thus offer two different perspectives: the museum explores history and remembrance, while the tower offers views of the landscape.

Historic Routes and Cycling Trails

The Imperial Training Ground Tour is a walking and cycling route across the former Lockstedter Lager training grounds. It starts at the museum by the water tower and is signposted. Nine historic military training sites, including bunkers, lie along the route. Information boards provide content in German and Finnish. If you are interested in the history of the area, you can visit individual sites here rather than taking a tour focused solely on the town center.

One section of this tour follows the Ochsenweg through the Rantzau Valley, which is protected as an FFH site. The renaturalized valley provides a habitat for many rare animal and plant species. The route therefore brings together historic traces and a protected valley landscape.

Another cycling option is the Meadows and Forests Tour. It is about 25 kilometers long and runs mostly along paved roads and quiet streets. The route passes through Hohenlockstedt and follows traces of its history. The two tours have different focuses: the Imperial Training Ground Tour centers on historic training sites and information boards, while the approximate distance of the Meadows and Forests Tour is a useful planning detail.

LohmĂĽhlenteich and the Landscape

About 1.5 kilometers west of Hohenlockstedt, LohmĂĽhlenteich lies in a landscape conservation area. It has a bathing area, a sunbathing lawn and wooded surroundings. A 1,000-meter-long nature trail adds to the experience. Admission and parking are free; there are also parking spaces for motorhomes and a kiosk. LohmĂĽhlenteich therefore offers something different from the historic routes: the focus here is on swimming and spending time in the landscape.

Regional Produce and Guided Visits

At Meierhof Möllgaard, the demonstration cheese dairy shows how cheese is made. The farm shop offers up to 90 specialty cheeses from 25 mostly small farm dairies. At Fischzucht Knutzen, the farm shop sells fresh and smoked fish, as well as other fish specialties. The traditional carp ponds are promoted as an excursion destination for anglers and others seeking recreation.

Bernd’s Kartoffelhof explains different potato varieties and its own growing process, from harvest to plate. The farm shop sells potatoes with a quality seal and other regional products. This gives you the chance to explore cheese-making, fish and potato farming as distinct aspects of regional production.

Hohenlockstedt erleben offers themed visits and guided tours with tastings, snacks or full meals. This may interest you if you’d like to combine a visit to the town with a culinary focus.
