The Joachimsquelle Landscape Conservation Area covers around 102 hectares and includes parcels of land in Poyenberg. It was designated under the district ordinance of Steinburg District dated 28 August 1980. Together with the Aukrug Adventure Tour, which passes through the village, the landscape and cycling shape Poyenberg’s character.
Protected Area and Landscape
The protected area extends along the route from the village of Poyenberg eastwards towards Dellen and also includes woodland there. The districts of Poyenberger Kamp and Joachimsquelle border wooded river and meadow areas. Nature is therefore evident both along the described boundary of the protected area and at the edges of these districts.
Poyenberg is located in Aukrug Nature Park. Its landscape includes heathland, moors, ponds, springs and streams. This is the wider nature park setting; for finding your way around Poyenberg, the Joachimsquelle area, the direction of Dellen and the two districts provide more specific points of reference.
Cycling on the Aukrug Adventure Tour
The Aukrug Adventure Tour passes through Poyenberg on the southern loop of Aukrug Nature Park. It is rated as moderately difficult and is mostly paved; at the same time, it runs along many single-lane farm tracks or driving tracks. The surface and difficulty rating describe different aspects of the tour: the paved sections do not change its moderately difficult rating.
Along the way, the route crosses river valleys, forests, hilly Geest landscapes, lakes and small rural settlements. This variety is part of the tour as a whole. If you plan to include it in your stay, check the current route data before setting off, as route specifications can change.
Festival History and Zur Eiche
Bully Club Poyenberg e.V. held its first tent festival in the village in 1990. A 2022 NDR feature also described Poyenberg as a place that turns into a festival site once a year. An NDR report from the same year names the Zur Eiche inn as the annual planning base for an Irish folk festival. These references offer insight into local festival history without specifying a current event date.
A 2022 NDR profile presented the Zur Eiche inn as a family business since 1928, and mentioned its dance hall, hunting room and shooting range. An event report also mentions a boules court at the Zur Eiche inn. If you would like to play boules there, check in advance whether it is currently available for use.
The Wider Region: Steinburg
In the wider Steinburg travel region, the district’s landscapes stretch from the Elbe to the Holsteiner Auenland. There is also a regional perspective for cyclists: the Elbe Cycle Route is one of five long-distance cycle routes that pass through Steinburg District. This distinguishes two different scales: the Aukrug Adventure Tour, which runs through Poyenberg, and the long-distance cycle routes in the wider region.
