Leezen offers nature and cultural attractions that can shape a stay in different ways: the Leezener Au lowland is characterized by wet grassland and rare plants, while the church features its own historic details, including older structural elements and furnishings. At Lake Neversdorf, there are also two bathing spots and a swimming island. This gives you three distinct interests to plan around: landscape, religious art, and time by the water.

Wet meadows, rare plants, and the lake

The Leezener Au lowland is a wet meadow valley covering around 300 hectares between Lake Neversdorf and Lake Mözener. Species-rich wet grassland and rare plants characterize the area; these include orchids, cowslips, sedges, and the endangered bistort.

The upkeep of the land is also part of what makes this natural area distinctive. Water buffalo are used in the Leezener Au lowland to preserve its species-rich wet grassland. In large parts of the Leezener Au, grazing is also adapted to the area and carried out by Galloway cattle, Fleckvieh cattle, and Icelandic ponies. These different animals are part of the landscape management.

Lake Neversdorf has two bathing spots with a swimming island between them. Fishing permits for the lake may be issued by the municipal administration and at Hotel Teegen. Check the current regulations before your trip, as conditions may change.

A church with several construction phases

The present-day brick church in Leezen dates from 1870 and retains a wooden, shingle-roofed bell tower from the 17th century. The building thus clearly brings together different construction phases. There are historic details inside, too: the altar, dating from the mid-17th century, is Baroque in style and features twisted columns.

The organ has 879 pipes and is used for both church services and concerts. The concert repertoire ranges from classical music to jazz and gospel. The church grounds also feature traditional sandstone grave steles and cast-iron crosses from the 19th century. The church is open to visitors for quiet exploration.

Activities and breaks in town

Cycling and hiking are among the nature activities in Leezen and offer different ways to discover its natural attractions. The village square has a playground and seating areas for families. It is a place where you can combine a visit to the town with a break outdoors.

The range of visitor amenities also includes a variety of places to eat. As individual options may change, check what is currently available before your trip. This way, you can plan meals to suit your stay without relying on any particular dining option.

Plan your journey and overnight stay
