Wees is a state-recognized resort, but not a community primarily shaped by tourism. Farms and agricultural businesses characterize the area, as do modern residential neighborhoods and commercial and industrial companies. Recreation and everyday life go hand in hand here.

Getting around and recreation

The Weesrieser Gehege is nearby and is used by people seeking recreation and by joggers. Municipal route-planning services default to Wees and can plan cycling and hiking tours in Schleswig-Holstein. While the Gehege is a nearby recreational area, the route-planning services cover the entire state. Wees is located directly on the B 199 between Flensburg and Kappeln.

Farm visits

The Andresen Adventure Farm in Wees offers visits for families, children’s groups, kindergartens, schools, and businesses. Activities include feeding calves and close-up encounters with animals. Children and adults can also sit on a tractor; treasure hunts and farm rallies are part of the program, too. Guided farm tours, children’s birthday parties, kindergarten and school outings, and company celebrations are also available. Arrange your visit before arriving; program details may vary.

Agriculture and rural character

The Jessen-Oxbüll farm shop specializes in direct sales of poultry and arable farming. Chickens and soup hens are available there; availability may vary. Fresh farm milk is available separately, directly from the dairy farm in Wees; check availability before arriving. The Jessen family’s agricultural work in Oxbüll goes back several centuries; its focus on poultry, especially chickens, dates back three generations. Oxbüll and Ulstrup are known for their historic character and rural charm.

In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers everything from cultural history to nature-based activities and family recreation. Haithabu and the Danewerk have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018; more than 25 kilometers of the Danewerk rampart remain. The historic memorial site and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the 1848 uprising and the Battle of Idstedt. At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district; it has well-developed trails and guided walks that share information about the local flora and fauna. The Schlei Nature Park has gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches, and swimming coves; the Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide habitats for numerous endangered bird species. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. The 25-kilometer SchleiUferTörn is a cycling circuit around the central part of the Schlei and starts in Arnis. Tolk-Schau Family and Leisure Park offers rides, playgrounds, park trains, fairy-tale huts, and more than 100 life-size dinosaurs, among other attractions.
