If you’re planning a stay in Dollerup, you can focus on three distinct aspects of the area: cycling and hiking routes through the hilly landscape of Angeln, the nearby coast of the Flensburg Fjord, and the Dollerup distillery. This combination appeals to travelers who want to pair outdoor activity with a culinary or cultural experience. The routes put the landscape in the spotlight, while the distillery adds its own culinary appeal; Dollerupholz beach rounds out the picture with a visit to the water. To decide whether Dollerup is right for your trip, you can weigh these different interests against one another.

Dollerup between Angeln and the Fjord

Dollerup lies on the B199 between Flensburg and Kappeln. The municipality is connected by cycling and hiking routes through the hilly landscape of Angeln; the coast of the Flensburg Fjord is nearby. This offers two different ways to enjoy the outdoors: exploring on foot or by bike, and making a separate trip to the water. You can therefore focus your stay more on the landscape or on the coast, without making both the same priority. The B199 serves as a geographic reference point for Dollerup between the two places mentioned.

Dollerupholz: Beach and Cliffs

Dollerupholz bathing beach lies on the southern coast of the Flensburg Fjord. The coast here is characterized by impressive cliffs. A small path leads from the parking lot toward the beach. There are picnic seating areas and an outdoor shower at the beach; the beach also has a free parking lot with toilets. These facilities make it easy to plan a coastal visit, while the cliffs shape the landscape. If you plan to use the facilities, check their current status in advance.

Dollerup Distillery: Production and Farm Shop

The Dollerup distillery is considered an attraction beyond the region and Germany’s northernmost distillery. Fruit spirits have been produced there since 2003; the distillery also makes German whisky, rum and gin. When ingredients are available, it also uses ingredients gathered from the natural landscape of Schleswig-Holstein. A visit therefore offers an insight into local production, with a range that includes different drinks.

At the Bioland-certified farm shop, you can sample and buy hand-bottled spirits. The selection also includes regional honeys, specialty vinegars and wines. You can visit the distillery during the shop’s opening hours; check the current hours in advance. If you’d like to learn more about the production process, you can plan an approximately one-hour introduction to distilling, including tastings of the spirits produced. Check in advance which dates are currently available. This lets you distinguish a shop visit from a more in-depth look at distilling.

History, Traditions and Natural Landscape

Dollerup’s history dates back to the Middle Ages. The municipality was part of the Danish Duchy of Schleswig. Local traditions also give the area its own cultural character, including an Easter bonfire, the raising of the maypole and a village festival. If you’d like to experience one of these festivals, check the dates before your trip.

Another point of interest is the Langballigau Valley nature reserve, which runs through Dollerup. Together with the hilly landscape of Angeln, it broadens the picture of the area to include a protected natural environment. As well as trails and the coast, the area’s history, local festivals and nature conservation offer different ways to shape your stay.

Schleswig-Flensburg in a Broader Context

The wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg offers additional, distinct themes. Haithabu and the Danewerk have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. Geltinger Birk offers a different focus: at 773 hectares, it is the largest nature reserve in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg. These regional themes add to the picture of cultural history and nature conservation, but are distinct from Dollerup’s local character, with its trails, distillery and nearby fjord coast.
