Nottfeld’s woodland and field edges, wetlands and the Schukjer Moor define the area. Christianslyst is also located in Nottfeld, offering accommodation primarily for larger groups. This means two aspects go hand in hand when planning a trip: a landscape shaped by moorland and woodland, and group accommodation with opportunities for shared activities. Whether the surroundings or the facilities at Christianslyst should be the main focus of your stay is a useful starting point when choosing accommodation.
Woodland, Field Edges and Moorland
Nottfeld is largely shaped by woodland and field edges. Hedgerows, wetlands and smaller wooded areas define the landscape. Half of the Schukjer Moor lies within Nottfeld. A 13-hectare remnant of raised bog is the focus of nature conservation efforts there, including the restoration of the water level. Christianslyst is also in Nottfeld, in the hilly landscape of Angeln between the Schlei and the Flensburg Fjord. The Schlei is about five kilometres from Christianslyst. The description of the area’s outskirts thus combines moorland and wetland with a hilly landscape that is connected to the Schlei from Christianslyst.
Christianslyst: History and Accommodation
Christianslyst was once a royal hunting estate. The present building was constructed in 1969; most of the older buildings were replaced by the current complex between 1969 and 1970. For visitors, the main consideration is its current purpose: Christianslyst primarily accommodates larger groups and has 140 beds. It also offers facilities for lessons, workshops and talks. This makes Christianslyst a practical option for groups whose stay includes not only overnight accommodation but also shared learning, work or events. Its focus on groups is therefore a useful first consideration when looking for accommodation in Nottfeld.
Activities at Christianslyst and in the Surrounding Area
Christianslyst has outdoor sports facilities for football, handball, volleyball, beach volleyball and pétanque, as well as a heated swimming pool. The pool has seasonal opening hours, which may change; check them before planning a visit. Hiking and cycling are possible in the surrounding area. Bicycle hire can be arranged through the staff at Christianslyst. Canoes can be rented through Christianslyst for trips on the Schlei. The activities differ in where they take place: sports and swimming are available at Christianslyst, hiking and cycling take place in the surrounding area, and canoe trips go out onto the Schlei.
Walking Destinations Around Nottfeld
The route goes to Norderbrarup and St. Mary’s Church. It also passes the ring-shaped Kummerhy burial mound. At Nottfeld, the route leaves the track and continues through the Peters and Kuhholz woodland. Its northern continuation passes the Thorsberger Moor. The route description thus connects named woodland areas with a burial mound, a church and a moor as specific landmarks for hikers.
Getting There by Train and Bus
The Flensburg–Kiel regional train runs hourly and stops at Süderbrarup station. From there, bus routes 605 and 610 go to Nottfeld. Connections and timetables may change, so check the latest information before travelling. Christianslust is a 500-metre walk from the Christianslust–Nottfeld bus stop. This makes it possible to plan the train journey, the bus connection to Nottfeld and the final walk to Christianslyst separately.
Schleswig-Flensburg in the Wider Travel Picture
In the wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg, Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart are still preserved today. Another historical highlight is the Idstedt Memorial and Museum, which explore German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. These topics offer an additional cultural and historical perspective on Schleswig-Flensburg alongside Nottfeld’s own moorland and woodland landscape.
