Lüngmoor lies between Stolk and Süderfahrenstedt. Its raised bog landscape, the finely divided parcels known as “Schifte,” and the history of peat extraction and restoration make it a distinctive nature-focused feature of a stay in Stolk.
Bog Landscape and Nature Conservation
Stolker Lüngmoor is a 38-hectare raised bog designated as a landscape conservation area. Its land is divided into parcels that are 15 or 30 metres wide and are called “Schifte.” The name gives this distinctive division its own term and offers a specific way to understand the landscape: the bog consists not only of wetland, but also of a described, finely divided parcel structure.
The conditions in the raised bog are low in minerals, acidic and wet. They support specialised plant and animal species, including some that are highly endangered. If you are interested in nature and conservation, it is worth considering how these factors are connected: Lüngmoor’s distinctive habitat conditions and the species that find a home there together define its character.
The history of land use is also part of this landscape. Peat was extracted as fuel in Stolker Lüngmoor until 1963. An initial restoration attempt took place between 1979 and 1983. Moorschnucken sheep were intended to keep larger vegetation in check. The information about extraction, the restoration attempt and the intended management describes different aspects of how the bog was treated, rather than presenting them as a single measure.
Understanding Hiking and Getting There
Stolk is shown on the Naturparkwanderweg overview map. The trail is almost 160 kilometres long, marked with yellow arrows, and passes through the region’s varied natural and cultural landscapes. It can be hiked in shorter stages or circular sections. This means that, alongside the distinctive habitat of Lüngmoor, there is also a wider regional hiking network to consider when planning your trip.
Bus services connect Stolk with Schleswig and Böklund. If you would like to use these services during your stay, check the current timetable for your travel dates: bus schedules can change, and the municipality refers visitors to up-to-date transport information. This can help you coordinate your journey and travel around the area with the available connections, without assuming a particular journey time.
A Memorial Site of Historical Significance
There is a monument on Stadtweg, also known as Schleppegrell-Weg. It commemorates a Schleswig-Holstein soldier who died while trying to establish an independent democratic state of Schleswig-Holstein. The site is called a memorial, not a grave, because there were no remains to be reinterred. This distinction is important to understanding the monument: it commemorates a person and a political undertaking, but it is not a burial site.
If you include the memorial site in your plans, you can add a historical focus to the nature theme of Lüngmoor. Confirm the monument’s current condition locally before your visit.
Stolk in the Wider Schleswig-Flensburg Destination
The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers themes beyond bog landscapes. The Schlei Nature Park features gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, fields of rapeseed and grain, sandy beaches and swimming coves; the Schlei’s brackish waters provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. The Danewerk is another historical landmark in the region: more than 25 kilometres of the rampart have been preserved. Haithabu and the Danewerk have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. These examples give an impression of the natural and cultural diversity of the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination.
