Loit offers two distinct reasons to plan a trip: its Romanesque fieldstone church and a canoe tour on the Loiter Au, for which you should allow around five hours. The town is also located entirely or partly within Schlei Nature Park. Building and art history, the water route and the nature park setting offer different focal points for a stay.

Romanesque Church and Historic Ensemble

The small Romanesque fieldstone church dates from the late 12th century; its irregular side walls have been preserved. Inside are Passion paintings, a late Gothic rood cross group and a granite baptismal font. The wooden pulpit is considered the oldest in Angeln.

Loit Church is significant for its history, art, townscape and influence on the landscape. The protected ensemble includes the church and its furnishings, the churchyard, granite embankment walls and a ring of lime and elm trees. The churchyard is also classified as an archaeological monument. The site therefore encompasses not only the church building but also its landscaped grounds.

Another historic building is the residential house at Dorfstraße 22. It dates from 1756 and 1845 and was part of a former three-sided farmstead. The church and the residential building offer different points of interest: the former for its Romanesque architecture and furnishings, the latter for its connection to the former farmstead.

Canoe Tour on the Loiter Au

The canoe tour from Loit to Winningmay follows the Loiter Au, covers about 15 kilometres and takes approximately five hours. It passes through an almost untouched landscape in Schlei Nature Park. The approximate distance and duration provide a concrete planning framework: allow time for the tour as a separate block, rather than treating it as a brief addition to another activity.

The Loit canoe launch site is a put-in point on the Loiter Au. It can be used at any water level, is accessible with a trailer and has a large car park. The B201 is also useful for finding your way around the town: it runs through Loit's built-up area.

Schlei Nature Park as a Wider Setting

Schlei Nature Park covers around 52,000 hectares and is Schleswig-Holstein's second-largest nature park. Throughout the park, you can explore the landscape on foot, by bicycle or on the water. It features gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, as well as sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei's brackish waters provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species.

Regional products are also part of this wider setting: farm shops in Schlei Nature Park sell regional products listed in the park's regional shopping guide. This information describes the wider surroundings; Loit's local highlights remain the church, historic buildings and canoe route on the Loiter Au.

More Things to Explore in Schleswig-Flensburg

The wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg offers further distinct themes. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart are still preserved today. The historic memorial site and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the 1848 uprising and the Battle of Idstedt. These regional cultural themes complement a visit to Loit without equating its local attractions with destinations farther afield.

You can choose what to visit based on your interests: the church offers specific details about its architectural history and furnishings, while the canoe tour provides a distinct outing with a defined route and approximate duration. Schlei Nature Park and other attractions in Schleswig-Flensburg broaden your view of the region, but remain distinct from Loit's local character.
