Quern offers different points of interest for a trip: Scheersberg, with its Bismarck Tower and educational centre, and the St. Nicolai ensemble in GroĂź-Quern. If you are looking for accommodation in Quern, it helps to decide first whether the landscape, a historic church ensemble or an educational programme is the main focus of your stay.

Scheersberg: high point, tower and exhibition

Quern lies in the Angeln hill country near the Flensburg Fjord. At 69 m above sea level, Scheersberg is the most prominent elevation in Angeln and lies between Groß-Quern and Nübelfeld railway station. This places two landscape features side by side: Quern’s location in the hill country near the fjord, and Scheersberg as a prominent high point. If landscape is your main consideration when choosing a location, this distinction provides a specific point of reference.

The Bismarck Tower stands on Scheersberg and was completed in 1903. It has two viewing platforms, on the 2nd and 4th floors. During extensive restoration work from 2014 to 2018, a permanent exhibition was installed in the tower across four floors, accompanying the ascent. The tower therefore brings together its historic completion and a later exhibition; the platforms and exhibition are arranged on different levels.

St. Nicolai and Scheersberg Educational Centre

The St. Nicolai ensemble in GroĂź-Quern is designated as a church monument; the churchyard is part of it. For a cultural and historical focus, the ensemble and churchyard are the main points of interest here, while Scheersberg offers a different connection through its tower and exhibition.

The International Youth Centre Scheersberg (IBJ) provides year-round cultural, social and political education for young people and families from Germany and Europe, as well as for people from the surrounding villages. The educational centre puts together individually tailored excursion programmes for companies, associations and other organisations. If you are planning for a group, check in advance whether a suitable programme is available. This educational work is therefore a distinct part of the area’s profile, alongside its architectural and landscape features.

Getting here and choosing a focus

Bus route 835 runs from the ZOB (central bus station) or Sörup railway station and stops directly in front of Scheersberg. If you plan to use this service to get there, check the current timetable before travelling. This information applies to Scheersberg; St. Nicolai is located in Groß-Quern.

You can distinguish between the different focuses: Scheersberg is associated with its high elevation, Bismarck Tower and an exhibition along the ascent; St. Nicolai with a historic church ensemble and churchyard; and the IBJ with year-round educational work and individually tailored excursion programmes for organisations.
