ARTEN EDEN is a nature experience park and wildflower garden in Eggebek. More than 50 native wild plant species, habitats for wildlife and a location right beside cycling routes give the visit a clear focus on nature and cycling.

ARTEN EDEN: Wildflower Garden and Nature Experience

Visitor attractions include environmental education stations, a tree-themed trail, a hedge maze, an aviary, a low ropes course and outdoor art. This combination makes the park interesting both for botanical observation and environmental education, while adding designed visitor features to these themes. Park facilities and plantings may change. Therefore, check which attractions are currently available and which plants can be seen before your visit.

Cycling and Hiking

ARTEN EDEN is located right on the Stapelholmer Weg and the “Auf dem Holzweg” circular cycling route. If you are travelling by bike, you can plan the park as a nature stop. This lets you combine a cycling tour with wild plants, wildlife habitats and environmental education. Route signage and conditions may change, so it is a good idea to check the latest information before setting off.

The Tydal Tour is a freely accessible circular hiking trail through the varied Tydal landscape. Sights along the route include the Treene, the Treenelandschaft Eggebek education centre and the ArcheGärtnerei. These named destinations give the circular route a specific focus. As trail conditions may change, check the latest information before your hike.

More Nature in Schleswig-Flensburg

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers more nature experiences. The Geltinger Birk covers a total area of 773 hectares and is the largest nature reserve in Schleswig-Flensburg district. It has well-maintained paths and guided walks that share information about the local flora and fauna. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. These places offer different ways to experience nature: guided interpretation at Geltinger Birk and birdwatching on Holnis.

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination also features the varied landscapes of the Schlei Nature Park: gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide habitats for numerous endangered bird species. This offers a different nature experience from a wildflower garden or circular hiking trail.

Cultural History in the Wider Destination

Haithabu and the Danewerk have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danewerk rampart still remain today. The historic memorial site and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the 1848 uprising and the Battle of Idstedt. Nature and history can therefore be considered as different focal points for a stay in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination.
