An unsupervised public swimming area on Brahmsee and a rural landscape give Eisendorf specific starting points for a stay. The municipality is located in Westensee Nature Park. When looking for a holiday apartment, a first question therefore arises: should Eisendorf itself be the main focus, or would you also like to include the wider destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, with its additional landscape and cultural themes?
Landscape and activities in Eisendorf
Wennebeker Moor is a nature reserve bordering the municipality. To the west of Eisendorf rises Liethberg, a glacial formation about 45 metres high. The rural landscape is another feature. Activities in Eisendorf include hiking, cycling, horse riding and nature-oriented recreation. You can choose how to explore the landscape: on foot, by bike or on horseback. This lets you tailor your stay to the activities that interest you.
Swimming area and playground
The public swimming area on Brahmsee is unsupervised. There is a shelter, but no toilets or changing rooms. Bear these facilities in mind if you are planning a longer stay by the water. Practical conditions can change, so it is worth checking them before your visit.
There is a public playground at HauptstraĂźe/Birkenweg. Its facilities include climbing bars, swings, spring riders, a combination play unit, a nest swing, a table tennis table and a seesaw. This brings a range of play and activity options together in one place. Check the facilities and their condition on site.
Rendsburg-Eckernförde as a wider destination
The wider destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde offers a broader view of the district: it has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and a signposted network of 1,000 kilometres of cycle routes, as well as four nature parks. For a broader travel itinerary, it offers different highlights from Eisendorf’s rural surroundings: cycling, coastal landscapes and nature parks are regional themes in their own right.
There are also hiking options across the district. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail passes through the four nature parks in Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. The European long-distance path E1, marked throughout with a white St Andrew’s cross, runs through the Hüttener Berge, Brekendorfer Wald and over Aschberg. The latter is 98 metres high; in fine weather, the panoramic view extends to the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and Kiel. These trails and landscapes offer a regional perspective without limiting Eisendorf’s own activities to a single route.
The wider destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde also offers other water and coastal highlights. Eckernförde has a four-kilometre-long white sandy beach. About 70 kilometres, or two thirds, of the Kiel Canal run through the district. Westensee, which covers around seven square kilometres, is a popular day-trip destination; Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park is characterised by numerous lake complexes in the Schleswig-Holstein hill country. This gives you a choice of different settings for nature and water experiences across the district.
Culture and food add their own highlights. The old town of Rendsburg dates back to the 13th century and is still characterised by medieval buildings. The Jewish Museum is housed in Schleswig-Holstein’s oldest surviving synagogue; the building is also a historic monument and memorial site. Eckernförde is associated with smoking sprats and other small fish: the famous Kiel sprats actually come from the fishing town of Eckernförde. These themes complement Eisendorf’s focus on nature with historical and culinary interests across the wider destination.
