Uetersen brings together a rosarium, monastery architecture and museums to create a destination with a clear focus on garden culture and city history. The Rosarium is northern Germany’s largest rose garden and a centre of German rose cultivation. Around 30,000 roses bloom there in June. If you want to experience this flowering season, you can plan your travel dates accordingly; at the same time, walks through the park, seating areas and play facilities are all part of what the Rosarium offers.

Rosarium and Garden Art

The garden can be explored in ways beyond its seasonal profusion of blooms: a walk through the park and the available seating areas offer another way to experience the grounds. The play facilities add to what is on offer, so a visit need not focus solely on the roses in bloom. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between June, the special flowering month, and a visit focused on a walk through the park.

Monastery Grounds and Architectural History

The historic buildings of the Noble Convent are set in park- and garden-like surroundings that are suitable for a walk at any time of year. This makes it possible to combine monastery architecture with time spent in green surroundings, even if your visit is not timed to coincide with the roses blooming in June. Haus der Priörin, Uetersen’s oldest house, was built in 1664 and is a listed building.

The monastery church also offers a distinct historical perspective: this late Baroque building was constructed in 1748/1749 and has a ceiling painting by Giovanni Battista Innocenzo Colombo. The church at the monastery also preserves a 17th-century relief of the Last Supper on its altar. Its construction date, style and individual works of art offer different ways to explore Uetersen’s history.

Langes Tannen: Park and Museum Complex

Langes Tannen covers 26 hectares of woodland, meadows, fields, parkland and ponds. The grounds are intended as a public recreational space. The mix of open areas and trees sets this landscape destination apart from the Rosarium, whose defining themes are rose cultivation and garden parkland.

The Langes Tannen Museum comprises three listed buildings: a Neoclassical manor house from the early 19th century, a barn dating from 1762 that was rebuilt after a fire, and a mill stump from 1796. The manor house displays a reconstruction of middle-class domestic life in northern Germany, focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries. The rebuilt museum barn contains an exhibition space for art and culture. The museum complex thus brings together architectural history and a range of exhibition themes.

City History and Seasonal Swimming

The Uetersen Local History Museum explores local history through shipping, whaling, crafts and rose cultivation. The Uetersen Museum of City and Local History offers a different perspective: it is housed in a former municipal utilities workshop building that is 150 years old. Together, the museums show how Uetersen’s history can be explored through different subjects and places.

For a seasonal swimming break, consider the Oberglinde natural outdoor swimming pool. It offers natural swimming with regularly monitored water quality. The sunbathing lawn and beach are accessible without barriers; beach volleyball, basketball and table tennis are also available. Facilities listed include free parking, showers, toilets, changing rooms and lockers. Swimming is seasonal. Check current access conditions and facilities before your visit.

If you want to explore gardens, nature and history together, consider the “Geology and Gardens” tour. It starts at Uetersen Town Hall and connects nature, history and garden art; the Rosarium and Langes Tannen Park are among its listed stops.
