Haseldorf lies on the Elbe; the Haseldorfer Marsch between the Pinnau and the Elbe offers views of a tidal river landscape protected by dikes. It also features historic sites, a freely accessible orchard meadow, and opportunities for wildlife watching and cycling. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these themes: the marshes are known for their landscape and wildlife, while BandreiĂźerkate, the castle and the estate park reveal other facets of the area.

Natural Areas and Wildlife Watching

The Haseldorfer Binnenelbe nature reserve, including the Elbe foreland, is part of the Haseldorfer Marsch. The marshes are home to a diverse range of plant and animal life; bird populations include up to 300 breeding pairs each of grey herons and cormorants. Birdwatchers may also have the chance to spot rare species. The number of breeding pairs is an upper limit, not a fixed annual count.

The NABU Nature Centre in Haseldorf Scholenfleth offers a different perspective on habitats. It explains the habitats and the animal and plant life of the nature reserve. The grounds include an insect hotel, a butterfly garden, an herb bed, a meadow orchard with raised beds, and a willow tunnel den. The nature centre offers talks and guided tours for groups.

The Elbmarschenhaus presents the natural and cultural landscape of the marshes through an exhibition and outdoor grounds. Its 7,000-square-metre outdoor area is a freely accessible nature experience space. The two facilities thus have different focuses: the Elbmarschenhaus centres on the landscape and its natural and cultural heritage, while the NABU Nature Centre focuses on the habitats and the animal and plant life of the nature reserve.

Orchard Meadow and Cultural History

A two-hectare orchard meadow, open to the public free of charge, lies right by Haseldorf harbour. It is home to 180 historic fruit varieties, including “Schöner aus Haseldorf”, “Seestermüher Zitronenapfel” and “Ananas Renette”. Visitors can sample the fruit during harvest season, so the season is an important factor if you want to try some. These varieties give a tangible impression of the diversity found in the meadow.

The 1764 BandreiĂźerkate brings traditional craftsmanship to life: visitors can see willow being made into barrel hoops. The historic building also provides a setting for cultural events such as concerts and readings. Haseldorf Castle dates from the 18th century and is surrounded by a picturesque park. Traditional crafts and historic architecture thus complement the natural attractions of the marshes.

In Haseldorf Estate Park, trees and ditches provide habitats for many birds and other animals. A historic lime avenue leads through the park to the manor house. The estate park is open to the public free of charge all year round; the buildings and the garden near the house are private. Check access conditions before your visit, and do not assume that the freely accessible park also grants access to private areas.

Walking and Cycling

The Haseldorf area has walking and cycling routes for visitors who enjoy nature. From Haseldorf harbour, cyclists can follow the dyke route via Hetlinger Schanze and Fährmannssand. Conditions along this route may change, so check them before setting out.

Another cycle tour starts at the Elbmarschenhaus. It follows the old dyke to the Haseldorfer Binnenelbe nature reserve, passes the remains of Bishorst and the Pinnau flood barrier, reaches Schleswig-Holstein’s oldest swing bridge and continues to Haselau. To distinguish between the routes, use their stated starting points and destinations: one starts at the harbour, while the other begins at the Elbmarschenhaus and ends in Haselau.
