Groß Nordende is a starting point for cycling tours through the Seestermüher Marsch and also a place with a clearly defined local history. Route and duration details help with travel planning; the former school building, the local history museum and the Ox Road provide concrete points of reference for its historical side.

Cycling tours and marshland

The Seestermüher Marsch cycling tour is about 34 kilometres long and takes three to four hours. Groß Nordende is also a starting point for cycling tours into the marsh. A route through the Seestermüher Marsch reaches the village via Utweg and continues along Dorfstraße towards Uetersen or Tornesch. Check current route signs and the condition of the paths before setting out, as both can change.

A cycling route offers a view of the 306-hectare Eschschallen nature reserve. Its reed beds are a breeding habitat for ducks, warblers and marsh harriers. If you are interested in birdlife, bear in mind that sightings vary by season.

Local history and historic routes

Groß Nordende developed as a settlement north of Uetersen. Historically, the village belonged to the County of Pinneberg and became a Prussian rural municipality in 1867.

The former school building is a listed building and has been restored. Part of the house is home to the Groß Nordender Zimmer local history museum. This brings architectural heritage and local history together in one building.

A section of the Ox Road also runs through Groß Nordende. Its historical context includes the driving of livestock from Denmark to northern Germany from the late 15th century onwards.

Food and individually arranged activities

Plantenhoff Café is located on a former farm and serves homemade cakes, gateaux and ice cream. Apple growing is widespread in the Seestermüher Marsch; fruit can often be bought directly from farms. Farm offerings may vary.

NORVIK runs an early medieval educational site in Groß Nordende. Its individually arranged programmes include historic crafts, Viking studies and weapons training. NORVIK also offers birthday events with games and competitions throughout the year.
