Lakes, forests and trails along the Elbe–Lübeck Canal give Lankau a clear focus. If you enjoy alternating between lakeside paths, forest trails and a swim, you’ll find several specific options for your stay. The two main lakes are used differently; there are also two named routes of 38 and 39 kilometres, similar in length but with different features.
Lake scenery and distinctive natural features
Gentle hills, extensive forests, lakes and traditional hedgerows known as Knicks characterise Lankau. The two main lakes are connected by a narrow waterway. They are about 30 metres deep, and their water is considered clear due to its lime content. One of the lakes has a campsite and a bathing area; the other is used for fishing. This means you’ll find swimming and fishing opportunities at different lakes. The forests around Lankau are also home to the Stork Oak, around 600 years old and designated a natural monument in 1935.
On foot, by bike and on tour
Lankau has an extensive network of paths for walks and bike rides. The paths lead through forests, along the lake and beside the Elbe–Lübeck Canal. Two routes offer a specific comparison of their lengths: the 38-kilometre Nature Park Tour follows the east bank of the canal from Lankau to Anker. The 39-kilometre Ice Age Tour includes a challenging terminal moraine section around Lankau and Albsfelde. The routes are almost the same length, but this challenging section is an additional factor to consider when planning the Ice Age Tour. At Lake Lankau, you can combine the Ice Age Tour with a swim and a refreshing break. From the canal path, it is also worth taking a look at Donnerschleuse lock in Neu-Lankau.
Places to stay and eat
Campingplatz Schmidt is right on Lake Lankau at the edge of the forest. Short-stay guests with their own caravan, motorhome or tent are welcome. Capacity and booking arrangements may change; check them before making specific plans. The Elbe–Lübeck Canal is close to the campsite and is ideal for walks and bike rides.
Hofcafé Brandtschatz Café am See is located on Lake Anker, near the canal. Diele am See can be hired for events for up to 70 people. Café opening hours and rental arrangements may change; check these details in advance if needed. A café farm shop sells homemade chutneys, sauces and juices made with regional ingredients; the selection may also change.
Cycling in the wider destination
If you venture beyond Lankau, the wider destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg offers an extensive cycling network: 1,000 kilometres of marked cycle paths, four long-distance cycling routes and 13 themed circular routes. E-bikes can be rented in Mölln, Ratzeburg and other places in the region; availability may change.
