Alt Mölln combines a local landmark and art in the village square with two named cycling routes, horse-riding activities and a seasonal farm shop. This gives you different priorities to consider when planning your trip: local culture, cycling routes by distance, and activities that may be seasonal or require booking for a specific date.

Village Square Art and the Mill

The local landmark of Alt Mölln is the Alt Mölln Mill. The village square is also home to an artwork featuring a group of chickens by local artist and sculptor Karl-Heinz Goedtke. This gives you two different cultural points of interest: the mill as a landmark and the group of chickens as a work of art in its own right. The artwork adds another perspective on the town alongside its connection to the mill.

Compare Cycling Routes by Distance

Two cycling routes are associated with Alt Mölln: “Forest, Water and Wind,” at 18.5 kilometres, and “Old Stones and New Paths,” at 20.8 kilometres. The second route is 2.3 kilometres longer. This gives you a concrete basis for comparison: “Forest, Water and Wind” is the shorter route, while “Old Stones and New Paths” is the longer one.

Horse Riding and Time Outdoors

Local facilities include a shelter with benches and a playground. Pony rides are available at Maith Adventure Farm, and a local riding stable offers riding lessons and trail rides. The horse-riding activities may be seasonal or require an appointment. So check in advance to arrange your preferred time.

Seasonal Produce

A seasonal farm shop in Alt Mölln offers local produce, including asparagus, carrots, strawberries and cherries. Availability may vary. If you are planning to buy specific products, it is best to check in advance what is currently on offer. This will help you plan your shopping around the season.

The Wider Travel Destination: the Duchy of Lauenburg

Beyond Alt Mölln, the wider travel destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg offers a landscape of its own. Forests cover 26 percent of the district of the Duchy of Lauenburg, which is also home to 48 lakes. The district also contains the Sachsenwald, the largest contiguous forest area in Schleswig-Holstein. The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park lies at the heart of the duchy. It covers an area of about 35 by 17 kilometres and provides a habitat for kingfishers, white-tailed eagles and cranes, among other species.

The nature park has hiking trails, observation towers, nature trails and places to stop and rest; it has been designated a protected area for visitors to enjoy since 1960. Activities available there include hiking, cycling, canoeing and swimming in forest lakes. There are also four signposted cycling routes. An observation tower on Lake Mechow invites visitors to watch waterbirds; with a little luck, you may also spot a white-tailed eagle there. These regional nature attractions complement Alt Mölln’s local points of interest with another perspective on the Duchy of Lauenburg.
