Klempau offers two clear starting points for planning your trip: the history of the Klempau settlement and routes through the municipality.
Settlement history and local routes
The Klempau settlement developed from the former Klempau Hof estate, which was initially a ducal demesne and later a district-owned domain. In 1938, the domain was divided into ten settler farms along Sarauer Straße and Tannenweg. This division marks the historical transition from domain to settlement.
Several routes in the municipality offer shorter or longer walks and cycling loops. Cycle paths connect Klempau with the neighboring municipalities of Krummesse and Berkenthin. One suggested cycling loop runs from Klempau to Krummesse; the return journey is via Tannenweg, Kählstorfer Weg or Taterweg. The Krummesse loop is therefore characterized by three return route options. The Lindenbusch cycling tour runs via Sarauer Straße, Farchau district forest, Groß Disnack and Kählstorf. This tour lists several waypoints rather than different return routes.
Another suggested low-traffic route runs from the village to the Klempau settlement via the former school path and Tannenweg. It is not suitable for bicycles or strollers.
Nature and village life
A pair of white storks regularly breeds successfully in Klempau. The municipal coat of arms also features a white stork: it represents the municipality’s commitment to preserving the species and symbolizes the coexistence of agriculture and nature. The Am Teich village restaurant attracts numerous guests from the surrounding area.
The garden at Dorfstraße 16 is open to visitors on Friday afternoons from April to September. Check access and opening times before visiting. The riding club is based at Klosterhof Klempau. Its facilities include an outdoor arena, a seasonal grass jumping course and an indoor riding arena. As facilities and access rules may change, check current visitor arrangements in advance.
The wider destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg
The wider destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg offers a broader regional setting for planning nature outings and tours. The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park covers an area approximately 35 by 17 kilometers in size and provides habitat for kingfishers, white-tailed eagles and cranes, among other species. Its visitor facilities include hiking trails, observation towers, educational trails and places to rest. Visitors can hike, cycle and canoe in the nature park, as well as swim in forest lakes; there are also four signposted cycling tours.
The long-distance hiking trails also cover the Duchy as a whole: the E1, E6 and E9 run from north to south through the Duchy of Lauenburg via Ratzeburg, Mölln and Lauenburg. The Duchy also has more than 20 shorter hiking routes, ranging from 4 to 27 kilometers in length. At district level, 26 percent of the area is forest; the Duchy of Lauenburg district also has 48 lakes. These regional landscapes and routes differ in scale from the paths through the municipality of Klempau.
