Frisian Culture and Early Settlement Traces
Utersum preserves three Bronze Age burial mounds, the Triibergem, which are associated with early settlement. Archaeological finds include an urn and a small bronze dagger blade. The mounds and finds make the village’s archaeological connections tangible.
The cultural landscape also includes thatched Frisian houses and vibrant Frisian traditions. These include the Fering dialect and traditional Frisian clothing worn at local events. When this clothing is displayed varies depending on the occasion. In Utersum, traces of the past thus sit alongside a culture that is still very much alive—two different perspectives on the village.

The Tourist Information office is located in the Haus des Gastes, right on Utersum Beach. Nature and Activities on Föhr
The tides shape the natural experience on Föhr, which visitors can enjoy at any time of year. Guided mudflat walks offer the chance to observe lugworms, mussels, starfish and wading birds. An approximately eight-kilometer mudflat walk leads from Dunsum on Föhr to the northern tip of the neighboring island of Amrum. Tides and weather conditions must be taken into account for this route.
Föhr’s cycling network includes more than 200 kilometers of designated cycle paths and five themed routes. Watersports schools on Föhr offer courses for beginners and advanced participants in windsurfing, kiteboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing. Both offer different ways to experience the island actively, without being tied to a particular location on Föhr.
The swimming pools at the AQUAFÖHR wave pool are filled with heated, original North Sea water. In the large pool, the wave feature creates North Sea waves every half hour. Opening hours may vary, so check the latest information before planning a visit.
Cultural Attractions on Föhr
The Föhr National Park House features exhibitions on habitats in the tidal zone, birds and the formation of the island; subjects and exhibits also include a porpoise skeleton and shells. Many events organized by the Wadden Sea Conservation Station start at the center, including nature walks across the mudflats, detective rallies and evening beach walks.
Other cultural attractions focus on different subjects: the Museum Kunst der Westküste explores the sea and coast and features important German and Scandinavian artists from 1830 to 1930; current exhibitions may change. In the center of Wyk, the Dr. Carl Häberlin Frisian Museum offers insight into Frisian history and culture. Near Borgsum, visible remains of the Viking Age Lembecksburg have been preserved on Föhr: a moat and a circular rampart up to ten meters high and just under 100 meters in diameter.

Getting to Föhr
