The historic village center, the apple garden and paths through the village give Wrixum different points of interest for a stay. Among Frisian houses, the mill and the church, local history takes center stage; the Gruffalo Trail and the play and sports area add specific leisure activities. Wyk is easy to reach on foot from Wrixum, so you can combine a visit to the village with a trip into town.

Village History Between Geest and Marsh

The old village center developed in the 15th century as a long, linear village along the marsh. In the northern area, a settlement structure that developed on the boundary between the Geest and the marsh has been preserved; historic buildings are also well preserved there. Together, these features describe different aspects of the village: its historic layout and the transition in the landscape to the north. Traditional Frisian houses have thatched roofs and distinctive gables above the entrance doors. If you enjoy looking at architecture, the roofing and gable shapes are specific details to look out for as you explore the village.

Church and Mill: Two Historical Milestones

The origins of St. Nicolai date back to around 1240. The church stands right next to Wrixum Mill, on the boundary with Boldixum, a district of Wyk. The mill is a “Großer Erdholländer” (large ground-sail windmill); it dates from 1851 and was in operation until 1960. It is one of five windmills on Föhr. The church and mill therefore represent different periods in the village’s history: the church’s beginnings and the more recent history of the mill.

Apple Garden and Roses

The apple garden is in the park next to Wrixum Mill, where paths and a fountain are among its defining features. Young trees of old fruit varieties grow in the garden. Roses bloom from spring to late autumn, and Wrixum’s colorful gardens offer visitors places to relax. The garden thus has a different focus from the historic buildings: here, plants, paths and the chance to linger take center stage.

On Foot Through the Village and into Wrixum Forest

The Bop is a footpath that winds through Wrixum and is ideal for exploring the village. The Gruffalo Trail, which opened in 2025, offers a different kind of walk: the approximately 1 km forest path leads through Wrixum Forest. Riddles and activities revolve around the Gruffalo and his friends; visitors also learn about the local flora and fauna through play. The trail is designed for children aged 3 to 6. Riddle cards are available at the starting point at the end of Lindenweg. As visitor information may be updated, check in advance, in particular, the age range and whether the cards are still available there.

Another attraction in Wrixum is a large sports and play area with swings, climbing equipment and space to play soccer. Along with the Bop and the Gruffalo Trail, the play area offers another opportunity for exercise and play.
