A three-kilometre promenade with views of the Halligen islands and the Wadden Sea, activities at South Beach and Frisian history at the museum give Wyk auf Föhr several distinct attractions. You can focus your days on coastal paths and the beach or include historic sites; the differences below will help you plan.

Coast, beach and accessible routes

The promenade is three kilometres long, fully accessible and offers views of the Halligen islands and the Wadden Sea. Wyk’s South Beach has two water sports schools as well as facilities for beach volleyball and beach soccer. So, alongside the promenade, there are specific beach activities to choose from as a separate focus.

Wheelchair-accessible routes to the promenade are available at beach sections 5–6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17–18, 23–24 and 26. If accessibility information is important for your plans, check the details again before your trip.

Museum, seaside resort and bell tower

The Dr. Carl Häberlin Frisian Museum in central Wyk displays its cultural history collection in ten rooms covering around 600 square metres. One section is devoted to whaling and seafaring. The museum opened in 1908. The oldest house on Föhr stands on its grounds: built in 1617, it was moved here from Alkersum in 1927. The museum’s open-air complex also includes a post mill from Hallig Langeneß. The museum is therefore newer than the house on its grounds.

Wyk was founded as a seaside resort and is considered the oldest seaside resort on Schleswig-Holstein’s west coast. Wyk’s first bell tower was built in 1701; historically, it signalled church services, fires and storm surges. The museum, the history of the seaside resort and the bell tower offer different ways to explore the town’s history.

Mudflats and the Wadden Sea

The National Park House in Wyk is an information and visitor centre for the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Guided nature walks across the mudflats, detective trails and evening beach walks start there. Programmes and dates may vary seasonally, so check in advance what is on offer during your stay.

Planning a trip to Föhr

Föhr island can only be reached by ship or by air. The W.D.R. catamaran, chartered to Adler-Schiffe, provides a fast passenger connection between Föhr, Amrum and Dagebüll. Check the current timetable and availability before your trip.

The cycling routes also cover Föhr as an island: there are more than 200 kilometres of designated cycle paths and five signposted themed routes. On Föhr, AQUAFÖHR provides wheelchair users with access to the beach promenade via a 40-metre ramp with a 7 percent gradient. If this information is important for your plans, check the accessibility details before your visit.
