Castle history, the Pausa Earth Axis and routes for walking or cycling give Pausa-Mühltroff a range of different highlights. When choosing a hotel, it may help to consider whether architectural and local history, the GDR Museum Mühltroff or outdoor activities will shape your stay. The “Around the Earth Axis Town” circular trail offers two route lengths; the West Vogtland cycle route connects Pausa-Mühltroff with cycling networks in Saxony and Thuringia.

Mühltroff Castle: History and Present-Day Use

Mühltroff Castle is a lowland castle first mentioned in official records in 1349. It was built on a greenstone rock; in the past, the castle served as a seat of lordship and administration. The medieval defensive and watchtower is considered the architectural focal point of the castle and a distinctive reference point for its architectural history.

The castle houses a local history room and a textile demonstration workshop. The Kospoth Hall and the Fireplace Room are used for exhibitions, concerts and weddings. There is also an art gallery with exhibitions that change each year. Uses and programmes may change; access to individual rooms may also vary. Therefore, check which rooms are open before visiting.

Church, Museum and Railway History

St. Michael’s Church in Pausa was rebuilt in 1825 after the town fire of 1822. A Steinmüller organ with two manuals and 20 stops was installed there in 1831. This connects the history of the fire and rebuilding with a specific feature of the church’s furnishings from the 19th century.

The GDR Museum Mühltroff preserves memories of 40 years of everyday life in the former GDR. It presents more than 4,000 large and small exhibits across approximately 300 square metres in ten rooms. The collection gives a tangible sense of the museum’s scale while also offering a look at different aspects of everyday life.

The historic railway station building in Mühltroff has also been preserved: it is on the Schönberg–Schleiz West railway line. Alongside the castle, church and museum, it offers another way to explore local history through a testament to railway transport.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

The “Around the Earth Axis Town” circular trail has a shorter option of about 8.5 kilometres and a longer one of about 16.5 kilometres. Comparing the two provides a concrete basis for planning around the route length. The trail runs mainly along paved forest and field paths, as well as sections of road. Trail conditions and the route may change; check for current information before setting out.

The West Vogtland cycle route passes through Mühltroff and reaches Pausa’s Centre of the Earth. It also connects Pausa-Mühltroff with Saxony’s long-distance cycling network and the Thuringian cycling network. The route features steeper climbs and views across the Vogtland’s hilly landscape. Network connections, signage and the route may change, so it is worth checking current route information before a bike ride.

The Earth Axis is located in the basement of the town hall, where visitors can view and lubricate it. Access arrangements may vary, so check in advance whether a visit is possible.

Outdoor Pool, Springs and Other Local Highlights

Pausa outdoor pool has a water slide, a large sunbathing lawn, and swimming, non-swimming, diving and children’s paddling pools. It also has table tennis and volleyball facilities. As seasonal opening may vary, check in advance whether the pool will be open when you plan to visit.

There is an orchid meadow on Jahnberg; its seasonal appearance may vary. Gottesgeschenk and Albertquelle each have a spring house. Eckardts Park is behind the former bathhouse. Reinhardtsquelle is in Bad Linda, and the medieval ring-wall complex is in Linda. Conditions at the spring and access to the ring-wall complex may vary.

Pausa-Mühltroff in the Vogtland

Pausa-Mühltroff is part of the Vogtland Mill Quarter in the wider Vogtland region, which extends across Saxony, Thuringia, Bavaria and Bohemia.
