A hunting horn dating from 1662 is among the more than 350 historical instruments at the “World’s Smallest Musical Instrument Museum” in Mehltheuer. The collection fills 32 m². A guided tour can also include a visit to the demonstration workshop, where plucked, bowed and reed instruments are made. This makes it possible to combine a museum visit with a look at different types of instruments and how they are made.

Hiking trails with different points of interest

The “Vogland’s Fruits” culinary trail connects the green-marked hiking trail between Kürbitz and Mehltheuer with the Vogtland Panorama Trail by the Großer Weidenteich nature reserve in Neundorf. Its focus is therefore on a connection between named hiking trails. If you want to take different route connections into account when planning, you can compare this connection with the Kürbitz–Mehltheuer hiking trail or the Dragon Circular Trail.

The Kürbitz–Mehltheuer hiking trail leads from Thossen uphill to the Reuther Linden Tree. From there, you can enjoy a view across the Vogtland. The route description thus identifies a specific viewpoint and a starting point for this section. This sets it apart from a route where distance or the sequence of places is the main focus.

The 10 km Dragon Circular Trail starts at the sports field in Mehltheuer. Its marker combines a green dot with the dragon Justus. Its length, starting point and trail markers provide specific reference points for planning your own outing. The ten kilometres indicate the route distance; no walking time is specified.

A cycling route is also described: the shortened version of the Dragon Cycle Route runs from Fröbersgrün via Klein Amerika and the Grenzweg to Mehltheuer. The return route goes via Schneckengrün and Kauschwitz to Syrau. The sequence of places distinguishes this version as a separate cycling option. It should not be confused with the hiking route between Kürbitz and Mehltheuer.

Cultural history in the village

The Waldhaus Mehltheuer is a listed inn with an excursion restaurant and a hall extension dating from 1898. It has architectural, local and social historical significance. The St. Stephen’s Chapel was built as a wooden barracks in 1958 and has since served the parish of Mehltheuer and Oberpirk as a place for services and gatherings. The two buildings represent different chapters in the village’s history.

Mehltheuer’s history also includes the former subcamp at the former tulle factory. It operated from 2 December 1944 to 16 April 1945. Machine parts were produced there for Vogtländische Maschinenfabrik AG (VOMAG); the prisoners were housed in a barracks connected to the factory. This historical context adds to the architectural and cultural history by recalling the factory’s use during the Second World War.

Plan a hike, cycling route or cultural history visit

The routes described can be distinguished by their specific features: the culinary trail links two hiking trails; on the Kürbitz–Mehltheuer hiking trail, the Reuther Linden Tree and its view across the Vogtland are points of interest; and the Dragon Circular Trail is defined by its ten-kilometre length and starting point at the sports field. The cycling option, by contrast, is described through a sequence of several places. You can decide which activity will shape your stay based on the type of route and the waypoints described.

Having an initial idea of your priorities can also help you choose accommodation: Would you mainly like to hike, include the cycling route or explore cultural history? Then compare specific offers with the places you would like to include in your own plans. The hiking and cycling options follow different routes and should therefore be considered separately.
