Forest and moorland landscapes, space travel and bell casting give Muldenhammer a range of distinctive features. For planning, specific trail lengths and landscape features are helpful; Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz also offers special cultural themes. This lets you tailor your stay to your preferred walking distance and personal interests.

Moorland and Spruce Forest

Muldenhammer is home to the Am alten FloĂźgraben FFH site. It is an enclave of natural spruce forest with former peat extraction areas and small regeneration areas, surrounded by near-natural spruce moorland and montane spruce forests. The Am alten Torfstich moorland nature trail passes through the protected areas of Am alten FloĂźgraben and Muldenwiesen. It is approximately 2.5 kilometres long, providing a clearly stated distance to help with planning.

A free forest car park on Lehmgrubenweg is located in Muldenhammer OT FriedrichsgrĂĽn, near the entrance to the moorland nature trail. Check the parking options before you travel. This gives you a specific point of reference for the trail without equating its approximate distance with a walking time.

Forest Trails with Different Highlights

The Waldgebiet circular trail connects Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz and Tannenbergsthal within Muldenhammer. It passes through Saxony’s largest contiguous forest area and through the 230-year-old spruce stand in the Drei Bächel natural forest reserve. Quiet ponds, flowing streams and colourful mountain meadows are also among the landscape features along the trail. This route therefore offers a different view of the area from the moorland nature trail: forest, waterways and open meadows together shape the scenery along the way.

The circular trail to Vogtlandsee is 11.5 kilometres long and runs almost entirely along forest tracks. Along the route, there are opportunities to swim at Vogtlandsee and a large playground at Waldpark GrĂĽnheide. Access to the water and facilities may vary by season; check the conditions for your visit. By comparison, the moorland nature trail is considerably shorter, at approximately 2.5 kilometres. These two distances help you assess your preferred walking distance while planning.

Another option is the Rautenkranz circular hiking trail. It starts at the car park of the German Space Travel Exhibition, offers views towards the settlement and passes Cottafelsen and a fallow deer enclosure. Its starting point and destinations differ from those of the two trails with stated distances: Cottafelsen and the fallow deer enclosure provide specific points of reference for the route.

Space Travel, Bell Casting and Mining History

The German Space Travel Exhibition is located in Muldenhammer OT Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz, Dr.-Sigmund-Jähn-Str. 4. The village is also associated with a historic tradition of iron bell casting: more than 9,000 church bells were made there. Space travel and bell casting offer different cultural highlights and complement the nature themes with a look at the history of technology and craftsmanship.

Guided tours at the Grube Tannenberg visitor mine offer another historical perspective. They cover the mining history of the Vogtland from the 16th to the 20th century. Check the tour dates before you travel so you can include a visit in your plans.

Getting There and Practical Information

For travelling by bus to Schneckenstein, the described connection is bus 70 to Falkenstein, followed by bus 23 to Schneckenstein. Check the routes and timetables before travelling. This allows you to take both bus legs into account when planning your journey without relying on an unverified timetable.

Forest, moorland, space travel, bell casting and mining history offer a variety of reasons to explore Muldenhammer. When choosing between the trails, the approximately 2.5-kilometre moorland nature trail and the 11.5-kilometre circular trail to Vogtlandsee make a helpful comparison; for the other destinations, named starting points or themes provide orientation.
