Klingenthal is located in the Ore Mountains/Vogtland Nature Park on the Czech border. You can get to know the town from very different perspectives: on a circular route to historic sites in the town center, along mountain trails, or through its music history and seasonal winter sports opportunities.
Aschberg Panorama and Local History
From Aschberg, the panorama stretches across the Vogtland, Upper Franconia and neighboring Bohemia, as well as Klingenthal’s narrow valleys. If you would like to combine the landscape with a walk through local history, you can take the Klingenthal Tafelweg. The circular trail starts at the Dr. Giers House and leads to historically significant sites around the town center.
Information boards along the Tafelweg provide context on local history, show historic photographs and point out town attractions as well as the landscape of the “Singing Valley.” The two perspectives are quite different: the Tafelweg leads to historic sites around the town center, while the view from Aschberg focuses on the valleys and surrounding landscapes.
Hiking and a Stop at an Inn on the Höhensteig
For a longer hike, the 50-kilometer Höhensteig is on a different scale from the circular route through the town center. It is certified as a “Quality Trail, Wanderbares Deutschland” and runs mainly along ridgelines in the Upper Vogtland, at elevations between 800 and over 900 meters. These details give you a clear idea of the route’s length and elevation without specifying a particular walking time.
There are numerous inns along the Höhensteig, making them suitable places to stop for a meal during your hike. This means you can plan the tour not only around its length but also around a break along the way. The Tafelweg and the Höhensteig offer different experiences: local history on a circular route or a longer hike along the ridgelines.
Winter Sports: Downhill Runs and Cross-Country Skiing
Klingenthal has both steep and gentle downhill runs served by lifts. Lift and slope operations are seasonal, so check current conditions before you travel. The snow-reliable region around Klingenthal also has more than 100 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails. Trail availability and grooming are also seasonal and should be checked before your arrival.
Downhill skiing and cross-country skiing are two different ways to experience the winter sports region: the focus is on lift-served slopes for downhill skiing and on the regional trail network for cross-country skiing. Which option is relevant to your travel plans also depends on the conditions at the time of your trip.
Arena, Music and Events
At the Sparkasse Vogtland Arena, you can take the WieLi to the ski jumping tower. The viewing platform and the capsule on the inrun tower offer panoramic views. The arena is also a venue for concerts ranging from classical to rock, folk festivals and popular sporting events. As the program changes, we recommend checking the current events calendar before your trip.
You can also explore music history at the Klingenthal Museum, which documents Klingenthal’s development into a music town on Aschberg. Church concerts are held at intervals in the “Zum Friedefürsten” Round Church. If you would like to combine your visit with an event, check the church’s current concert schedule; concerts are not held on a continuous basis.
Animal Park and Cycling Route
Klingenthal Animal Park is home to more than 40 animal species, including alpacas, pygmy goats and meerkats. The grounds include two playgrounds and a petting enclosure with guinea pigs and dwarf rabbits. The petting enclosure is seasonal, so plan your visit accordingly.
The Klingenthal–Markneukirchen gravel cycling tour offers another option, connecting the two music towns through deep forests, gentle hills and along streams. The tour mainly follows existing cycle paths and public roads and has no dedicated trail markers. As conditions depend on the weather and navigation information may change, check the weather and route before setting off.
