The 321-metre-long market square and the striking town church define Adorf/Vogtl.’s historic centre. It is the longest market square in the Vogtland region. The town also has a history shaped by mother-of-pearl goods, a surviving town gate and hiking trails that reach as far as alpine flora. This makes it possible to explore the town according to different interests, focusing either on local history and craftsmanship or on gardens and trails.
Mother-of-pearl history and the historic centre
In the 19th century, Adorf was a centre of German mother-of-pearl goods production. The surviving Freiberger Gate is a historic town gate, with parts of the old town wall preserved right beside it. The gate houses a significant collection on the freshwater pearl mussel, pearl fishing in the Vogtland and mother-of-pearl production. Local history and craftsmanship offer two different ways to explore Adorf. Musical instruments have also been made in the Upper Vogtland for more than 350 years.
The Mother-of-Pearl Experience Museum presents the freshwater pearl mussel both as a pearl producer and as a living water filter. Its immersive presentation includes media and interactive stations and is designed as a journey of discovery for children and adults. The museum thus brings together natural history and craftsmanship without viewing the mussel solely in terms of its role in pearl production.
Alpine plants and hiking trails
The focus at Adorf Botanical Garden is on alpine flora, with thousands of plants from mountain regions around the world on display. Its tufa limestone area is considered the largest of its kind in a German botanical garden. The garden offers a distinct alternative for a themed comparison with the history of mother-of-pearl: here, the focus is on alpine plants and tufa limestone.
Hiking routes come in different lengths. The Zeidelweide Valley nature trail is about 8 km long and has 52 information boards in German and Czech. There are also more than 60 km of additional marked hiking trails, with viewpoints, rest areas and places to eat. The nature trail is a single themed route alongside a much more extensive network of additional trails.
One hiking route in Adorf starts at the WaldbadstraĂźe car park, passes Klein-Vogtland and the Botanical Garden, runs through the Zeidelweide stream valley and connects to the Vogtland Panorama Trail. The Panorama Trail itself is 225 km long. Before setting out, check the trail conditions and waymarking, as both may change.
More cultural and seasonal attractions

The outdoor pool includes a large water slide, a diving tower, a current channel, massage jets and a water playground. These facilities are seasonal; check current operating information before your visit.
