Wildenfels lies in a hilly, green landscape framed by the ridges of the Ore Mountains. Alongside the Wildenfels Intermediate Mountain Range, the castle, churches and Niedere Schönauer Mill make this a destination where culture and landscape come together. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can weigh up these different priorities accordingly.

Landscape and the Intermediate Mountain Range

The Wildenfels Intermediate Mountain Range is a protected landscape area between Wildenfels, Hartenstein and Langenweißbach. It stretches from the Mulde floodplain via Aschberg to Augustenhöhe and is bounded to the south by the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde. The limestone quarry area of the intermediate mountain range is part of the Natura 2000 network and is protected as an FFH area. The landscape therefore encompasses the named heights and valleys as well as the limestone quarries.

Wildenfels Castle and Culture

Wildenfels Castle stands on a rocky promontory above the town and is a defining feature of its landscape. The castle houses museum facilities and a contemporary gallery with exhibitions for visitors; the exhibition on show may change. The Chinese Cabinet has richly detailed wall coverings with silk appliqués in the chinoiserie style. In the Blue Salon, silk wallpaper with colourful embroidery and an interior influenced by Oriental design have been preserved. The distinctive designs of the rooms give a visit to the castle a clear focus.

You can explore the castle with trained guides. Before travelling, check whether a tour is available on your preferred date. The cultural programme includes concerts, reading evenings and castle festivals. If an event is a deciding factor for your stay, check the dates in advance.

Churches and Local Insights

The municipality of Wildenfels also offers art and history beyond the castle. In Härtensdorf, you will find the Church of the Three Marys, with an altarpiece by Peter Breuer and memorial plaques of the Lords of Wildenfels. Schönau is home to St. Roch’s Church, with altar figures by Peter Breuer. The local history room by the park pond tells visitors about Wildenfels as the “gingerbread town.” These places offer different highlights, from religious art to the town’s local nickname.

Routes Between Mills and Landscapes

The “Museum in the Landscape” route leads to the Schönau lime kiln, the quarries on Grünauer Höhe and a vertical lime kiln before returning to Wildenfels. The ten-kilometre Mühlenwanderweg (Mill Hiking Trail) runs from Zschocken through Wildenfels to Schönau. Another described route is the circular trail from Wildenfels via Langenweißbach and back; nine information boards explain the Wildenfels Intermediate Mountain Range along the way. The routes differ in their course and theme: the Mill Hiking Trail and the return route each have named stages, while the circular route introduces the landscape with information boards.

When choosing a route, please note that a local circular trail is partly inaccessible because one section crosses private property. Check the conditions on the affected trail before setting out.

Hiking Trails in Zwickau District

As a regional framework, Zwickau District offers a marked hiking trail network of around 700 kilometres, with numerous rest areas and places to stop for refreshments. The Zwickau Tourism Region also provides digitised hiking routes and an overview map of cycling and hiking trails. This information refers to the district or the tourism region, not to individual trails in Wildenfels.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Wildenfels, you can choose your travel focus more specifically: the castle, exhibitions and cultural events offer a different experience from the routes through the intermediate mountain range. Plan your stay according to which of these themes you want to focus on.
