Crimmitschau combines an art-historical city walk with the history of textile production and paths through the Sahnpark. There are also attractions in Frankenhausen and offerings such as the Sahnbad and the animal enclosure. This lets you plan a trip that combines architecture, industrial history and nature without trying to fit all your interests into a single outing.
City Walk and Textile History
The 3-kilometre art-historical city walk starts and ends at Crimmitschau railway station. It links 15 buildings and places of architectural and urban historical significance. Stops include St. Lawrence Church, the Wettin Fountain, the villa district on Lindenstraße and the former Schocken department store. The manageable route and its range of stops provide a clear framework for exploring the town’s architectural and urban history.
The Historic Gebr. Pfau Cloth Factory offers a different way to explore local history. This industrial monument of European standing is used as a museum. Guided tours trace the production of woollen cloth step by step and also explore the working and living conditions of textile workers in the past.
The cloth factory preserves historic facilities for spinning, weaving, washing, dyeing and drying, with largely original machinery. Since 1990, the former factory complex has been a listed monument as a testament to industrial architecture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While the city walk brings together several buildings and places, the cloth factory focuses on production processes and working life.
Sahnpark: Paths, Nature and Swimming
Sahnpark is Crimmitschau’s largest and oldest park. Its 6.5-kilometre network of paths is designated for walks, jogging and walking. A nature trail provides information about local wildlife and plant life. The park therefore offers both opportunities for exercise and a focus on nature, without limiting its paths to a single activity.
The leisure facilities also include the Sahnbad, a regional forest swimming pool with a swimming area measuring 50 by 100 metres and a children’s pool. The animal enclosure has an adventure playground, a nature trail and a green classroom for schoolchildren and kindergarten children. Each attraction has a distinct focus: swimming, nature education, or play and learning for children.
Frankenhausen and Paths Through the Countryside
History and landscape are present in different ways in Frankenhausen. The ruins of the Cistercian nunnery date back to 1292; the associated complex is a listed monument. The 2.8-hectare Hofteich pond lies in the town centre. The Pleiße floodplain is a defining feature of Frankenhausen’s landscape.
There are also various landmarks for hikers: the Luther Trail reaches Crimmitschau via historic town centres, forests, parks and several lakes. The Luther Trail and the Way of St. James meet in Frankenhausen. This makes it possible to choose between a route through changing landscapes and the shorter paths in Sahnpark, depending on which sections interest you.
Plan Your Journey
Crimmitschau has connections on S-Bahn services S5 and S5X, as well as bus routes 119, 159 and 160. As transport services may change, check current connections before you travel. Your priorities can help determine your choice of accommodation: the city walk and cloth factory focus on architecture and industrial history, while Sahnpark and Frankenhausen add further nature and landscape themes.
