Oberlungwitz can be explored through several themes: the town stretches for about seven kilometres along the upper reaches of the Lungwitzbach; there is also the Lungscher nature trail, churches with different historical layers and the Sachsenring. Nature and conservation, local history and motorsport each offer their own focus. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Nature Trail and Landscape

The Lungscher nature trail starts at Henny Pond and leads directly into the Hirschgrund landscape conservation area. Information boards focus on environmental protection and nature conservation, giving the route a clear subject focus alongside its scenic destination. Route details may change if the site is redesigned, so check the current route before your visit.

Churches with Different Historical Layers

The Abbey Church was built between 1746 and 1748 and consecrated in 1749. Built in the style of an old village church, it has two galleries. Inside are a small two-manual Kreuzbach organ with mechanical cone chests, as well as a Baroque pulpit depicting Moses with a tablet bearing the Ten Commandments. Two old bells from the Abbey Church are kept at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. The building, its furnishings and the bells now kept elsewhere offer different perspectives on the church.

St. Martin adds a different timeline to this picture. The church preserves a medieval section of its tower; it was rebuilt in 1804, and its interior dates from the early 19th century. A 45-metre-high tower offers views of Oberlungwitz, the surrounding area and the Ore Mountains. The church also has a large three-manual Jehmlich organ. While the Abbey Church is shaped by its 18th-century architectural and furnishing history, St. Martin brings together medieval building fabric and a later church interior.

Everyday and Transport History

Traces of the town’s earlier history can also be found outside the churches. Historic three-sided and four-sided farmsteads can still be seen in Oberlungwitz; they date from the time when the town was a farming village. The year 1731 is associated with stocking knitting: that was when Samuel Uhlig acquired the town’s first stocking-knitting machine. The Lungscher Stadtgeflüster project has placed historical information boards at significant buildings and locations where parts of Oberlungwitz’s history have disappeared.

Transport history offers several points of interest, too. Oberlungwitz’s historic post station stood on the old Franconian postal road from Chemnitz through Oberlungwitz to Lichtenstein. The preserved Royal Saxon milestone is associated with the station and now stands on the newly redesigned forecourt beside the Zur Post inn. Oberlungwitz’s location on the historic thoroughfare from Hof via Zwickau to Chemnitz brought heavy traffic and frequent troop movements.

Sachsenring: Motorsport and Driving Experiences

The history of the Sachsenring follows a clear timeline. After the old road circuit closed in 1990, the new centre was built six years later between Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Oberlungwitz; two years after that, the Motorcycle World Championship returned.

At the Sachsenring in Oberlungwitz, visitors can take part in safety or sport driving programmes for cars and motorcycles. Options include drifting and circuit training, motorcycle cornering training, racetaxi rides, Formula and touring car driving, sidecar taxi rides and indoor karting. The range extends from training sessions to passenger rides and driving experiences at the wheel. Check in advance which programmes are available on your chosen date.
