Crinitzberg can be explored through several distinct themes: the moorland of Moosheide, hiking trails with clearly specified distances, and natural and architectural monuments such as the Taufstein and the church in Bärenwalde. What you choose to focus on during your trip can therefore guide your choice between a hike, a cycling tour and a focus on local history.
Moorland and protected nature
Crinitzberg lies in the southern part of the Kirchberger Granit landscape conservation area. The Moosheide nature reserve covers around 62 hectares and includes Obercrinitz and Bärenwalde within Crinitzberg. Moosheide is a largely peat-extracted raised bog at an elevation of 490 to 500 metres and is one of the lowest raised bogs in the Ore Mountains.
The landscape is home to typical bog and marsh plants. The area is protected as woodland, serving as a water reservoir and providing a habitat for protected plant communities. Those planning a trip with a focus on nature and landscape will find not only the elevation but also the distinctive character of a raised bog useful in deciding where to go.
Compare hiking trails by distance and destination
In Crinitzberg, well-maintained and signposted trails lead to scenic spots within the municipality. The trail distances provide a clear basis for comparing hikes: the Bärenwalde circular trail is 11 kilometres long. Two trails starting in Obercrinitz are 8.5 and 7 kilometres long, respectively; their destinations and routes differ.
The Bärenwalde circular trail begins at the Gasthof Eisenbahn bus stop and passes the mineral spring on its way to Moosheide. Along the way are the beech tree natural monument with its stone plaque and a mountain panorama. The trail also features a wildlife enclosure, a shelter, and wooden figures shaped like a locomotive and a crocodile.
The 8.5-kilometre Obercrinitz–Amselgrund–Giegengrün–Lauterhofen–Obercrinitz route starts at the Obercrinitz bus stop. For hikers who do not want a longer tour, it offers the option of returning via Giegengrün or Lauterhofen. The 7-kilometre route runs from Obercrinitz along Alte Wildenauer Straße to the Schwedenfichte and back; it reaches the Schwedenfichte natural monument and passes through biotopes. It is advisable to check current trail conditions before setting out.
Village history and monuments
Bärenwalde and Obercrinitz are considered two-row Waldhufendorf villages; they lie on either side of the Rödelbach and Crinitzbach streams. Bärenwalde is home to a church considered the second-largest village church in Saxony. It was built in 1733, and its 50-metre-high tower was added in 1775. The church contains a protected pipe organ. During the Christmas season, the Bornkinnel is displayed on the church altar.
Another natural monument is the Taufstein: an irregularly rounded granite block measuring about 2 to 2.5 metres in diameter. It has a large basin and five seat-like hollows and is protected as a monument. A forest church service is held at the Taufstein every summer. This seasonal association differs from the Christmas display of the Bornkinnel in Bärenwalde.
The mineral spring in Obercrinitz is also part of the village’s history. It was discovered in 1935 and was historically linked to local tourism. After being reconstructed, it was presented to the public again in 1999. Today, the water is contaminated and cannot be used for therapeutic purposes. The spring lies along the Bärenwalde circular trail; the current restriction on using its water remains important to bear in mind.
A cycling route through Crinitzberg
By bicycle, the Rödelbach-Bürstenroute offers a different perspective on the route than the local hiking trails. The 32.21-kilometre tour runs from Wilkau-Haßlau to the Eibenstock reservoir and through Crinitzberg; it follows public roads throughout. After leaving Zwickau district, it enters the Ore Mountains brush-making region and connects with the Saxon Central Mountains Long-Distance Cycle Route. This also makes it possible to see Crinitzberg as one stage of a longer regional cycling tour. As road conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.
