Fortified Wall and Church

The fortified wall encloses the church in Horka and measures 50 meters in diameter and 7.5 meters in height. The fortified complex is estimated to be about 800 to 900 years old. The church contains centuries-old wall paintings; the altar dates from 1667. These represent distinct aspects of Horka’s history: fortification, painting and a dated furnishing.

A concert is traditionally held at Horka’s fortified church as part of the Görlitz Jazz Festival. Check the current event dates if this event affects your travel plans.

Wetlands and Trails

The FFH site near Biehain covers approximately 193 hectares. Its western section is near Waldsee in Biehain, on the Biehain–Mückenhain road, and includes ponds west of Biehain. In addition, part of Horka is designated as part of the “Ponds and Wetlands Northeast of Kodersdorf” FFH site. The 2011 designation covers areas in Horka and Neißeaue. If the site’s conservation requirements are relevant to your plans, check the current regulations.

The Horka–Biehain Water Trail is a 12.6-kilometer educational and recreational trail in the Upper Lusatia tourism region. The Neißeland Tour offers a different scale: this cycling circuit is 143.42 kilometers long, follows the Frog Cycle Route as far as Horka, then continues to Rothenburg/O.L. Most of it runs along existing signposted routes, including the Oder–Neisse Cycle Route, the Frog Cycle Route and regional trails. The difference is clear when choosing a route format: an educational and recreational trail or a much longer cycling circuit.

Pedal boats and rowing boats are available for hire at Waldsee Biehain. Other amenities include volleyball, table tennis, a children’s playground and dining facilities. As facilities and services may change, check the latest information before visiting.

Horse Riding and Regional Highlights

The “Wehrkirch” Horka Equestrian and Driving Club offers riding lessons for younger and older learners. Activities for club members include dressage, show jumping, carriage driving and cross-country riding. If you are planning lessons or any of these disciplines, confirm the current arrangements and participation options with the club in advance.

In the wider Görlitz destination, the northern Neißeland area is associated with cycling tours and relaxation among park and palace landscapes. Görlitz’s Old Town also offers its own cultural highlight: Schönhof, rebuilt in the Renaissance style after a town fire from 1526 onward, is the main building of the Silesian Museum in Görlitz and one of the oldest Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. The historic Old Town contains about 4,000 architectural monuments and is one of the best-preserved historic ensembles in Central Europe. Görlitz City Park was laid out in the 19th century and offers extensive meadows, mature trees and walking paths.
