A setting rich in forests and water, the historic Schusterhof and overnight stays in Canadian log cabins give Trebendorf a distinct character. Two different highlights are worth considering when choosing where to stay: Schusterhof focuses on Sorbian heritage and a programme of events with changing dates, while Reinert Ranch combines accommodation with dining and activities. Trebendorf lies northwest of the Muskau Heath and within the Muskau Arch UNESCO Global Geopark. This lets you choose what to focus on in the area: the landscape, culture or the ranch’s offerings.
Sorbian Heritage at Schusterhof
Schusterhof is a historic ensemble of Sorbian heritage in Trebendorf. It includes a relocated, listed timber house, a bakehouse, a museum barn, a well, outdoor grounds and a historic classroom. The combination of buildings, outdoor spaces and classroom makes the farmstead a tangible architectural and cultural-historical ensemble.
The programme includes guided tours for children, students and tourists, as well as readings, theatre performances, church services and demonstrations of baking in a wood-fired oven. These demonstrations feature bread, cakes, stollen and cookies. This means the same place offers both a historic ensemble and a variety of cultural activities. Dates for individual events may vary, so check the specific event dates before your visit.
Overnight Stays and Activities at Reinert Ranch
Reinert Ranch in Trebendorf offers overnight stays in Canadian log cabins. The facilities also include a saloon-style restaurant, a swimming pond, quad bike tours into the open-cast mining area, horse riding and Western riding, as well as carriage rides.
If you are considering the ranch as a place to stay, check availability before your trip.
Görlitz: A Distinct City and Cultural Destination
Görlitz adds a distinct city and cultural dimension to the wider travel destination. The Schönhof in Görlitz is the main building of the Silesian Museum in Görlitz and is one of the oldest Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. After a city fire, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style from 1526 onwards. The historic old town offers another architectural highlight: it comprises around 4,000 architectural monuments and is one of the best-preserved historic ensembles in Central Europe. Görlitz’s historic heart, Untermarkt Square, is surrounded by townhouses from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Other cultural attractions in Görlitz offer different highlights. ViaThea, the street arts festival, is one of the regular highlights of Görlitz’s cultural calendar; check the latest dates and programme before your visit. The vivarium at the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz presents around 70 animal species in twelve elaborately designed landscape tanks covering 100 m². In the live animal area of the same museum, a feeding demonstration takes place on the first Thursday of every month at 4 p.m.; admission is included with the museum ticket. Check the current calendar before your visit.
During the summer months, boat and paddle trips offer a way to explore the river landscape in the Neisse Valley, letting visitors experience Görlitz from a new perspective. This seasonal activity is in Görlitz and is not a feature of Trebendorf.
