Lake Bärwalder See is Saxony’s largest inland lake and gives Boxberg/O.L. a clear focal point for a stay by the water. Its creation also tells the story of a changing landscape: the lake was formed by flooding the former Bärwalde open-cast mine, a process completed by 2010. Around Boxberg/O.L., you can include a designated cycling circuit, walks to viewpoints and activities along the lakeside promenade in your travel plans.
The lake and landscape around Boxberg/O.L.
The Bärwalder See Landscape Park lies within the municipality of Boxberg/O.L. and next to the UNESCO Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve. The wider landscape of the region also includes pine forests, heathland, river meadows and ponds. Cycling around Lake Bärwalder See
The recommended Bärwalder See circuit starts and ends at the tourist information centre in Boxberg/O.L. It is 21 kilometres long and runs mainly along a flat, paved lakeside path. Along the way, the route passes through Klitten and Uhyst. This makes the tour easy to plan as a circular route with clearly named waypoints; its length and course set it apart from a short walk to a single viewpoint.
Walk to the viewpoint on the OHR
A path about one kilometre long leads to a viewpoint on the OHR, with views of Lake Bärwalder See. The OHR also contains an amphitheatre with 270 seats. The OHR is approximately 350 metres long, 250 metres wide and 18 metres high. The walking path, viewpoint and amphitheatre offer different ways to enjoy a visit, without requiring a set itinerary.
Lakeside promenade, boat hire and places to eat
The Boxberg lakeside promenade has a berth for motorboats with boat hire, as well as an inline skating arena. Check that these activities are available before you travel. The “Markise” beach bar is located directly on the Boxberg beach promenade by the lake; it is a seasonal option, so check its opening arrangements in advance.
The “Arche” restaurant is on Lake Bärwalder See near Klitten Marina and offers lake views. Its menu includes breakfast, lunch, coffee and dinner. This makes it possible to combine a stay by the water with dining at different times of day. For specific plans, it is a good idea to check the latest information about the restaurant and seasonal beach bar.
