Exploring Kubschütz on foot, you can combine a longer themed hike with individual cultural and scenic destinations. The focus is the Kobold Trail: an eight-kilometre circular route marked with the Kobold logo. It is considered a family-friendly themed hiking trail and is also rated as moderate to difficult. The hike is estimated to take around four hours and cover 260 metres of elevation gain. This makes it easy to plan the tour as an activity in its own right.

Landscape around Czorneboh

The municipality stretches from the 556-metre-high Czorneboh in the south to the Kreckwitz Heights in the north, which lie at an elevation of 195 metres. Kubschütz is part of the Lusatian Highlands; the terrain is hilly along the Czorneboh range. The landscape thus features Czorneboh as a southern landmark and the lower Kreckwitz Heights to the north. Czorneboh is also home to a viewing tower associated with the mountain inn there, which is considered the oldest viewing tower in Upper Lusatia.

The Kobold Trail: a circular route with climbs

The Kobold Trail starts at the playground in Rachlau and climbs towards the summit of Czorneboh. Along the way, the route passes the Teufelsbecken (Devil’s Basin) and continues to Hromadnik, also known as Döhlener Berg, with its rock formations. It returns to Rachlau via Schönberger Pass. Listening stations, information boards, rest areas and natural attractions give the trail its themed character.

There are additional starting points and parking facilities in Rachlau, at Czorneboh and at Schönberger Pass. Information on difficulty, elevation gain and estimated duration can help you plan your hiking day; check the latest route details before setting off. You should also confirm parking availability locally before you leave.

Churches, viewpoints and Sorbian tales

Kubschütz’s attractions include Purschwitz Church, the Blücher Monument in the Kreckwitz Heights, Monarchenhügel in Jenkwitz and the crocus meadow in Kreckwitz. The crocus meadow is in Kreckwitz Castle Park. As the flowering period varies, it is advisable to check the timing in advance if seeing the crocuses in bloom is important to your plans.

A special feature of Purschwitz Church is its organ: it has the only Zimbelstern in the parish. The mechanism sets a bell chime in motion and makes a star visibly rotate. The Scipata-Maratha bench stands in the village square in Kubschütz and is linked to the Sorbian legend of the Noon Woman.

Pilgrimage route and getting there

The Ecumenical Pilgrimage Route also passes through Kubschütz. Its second stage goes through Kubschütz, Baschütz and Jenkwitz and reaches Bautzen after 25.6 kilometres. If you plan to walk this section, check the route before setting off.

Kubschütz has a railway stop, and Litten/Bautzen Regional Airfield is also accessible from the municipality. For road travel, there is a nearby connection to the A4. As transport infrastructure and connections can change, check the latest travel links before your journey.
