Sehma connects hiking destinations in two directions with its own architectural and cultural highlights. From here, the Firstenweg runs south toward Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal or north to Frohnauer Hammer. St. Paul’s Church and Christ Church have different links to Art Nouveau, while Erzgebirge craft traditions complete the picture. You can shape your stay around a mix of outdoor activity and cultural interests.

Situated between three table mountains

Sehma lies at an elevation of about 600 m above sea level, between the table mountains Bärenstein (898 m) to the east, Scheibenberg (807 m) to the west, and Pöhlberg (832 m) to the north. The compass directions provide a clear geographical reference. The mountains also differ in elevation: Bärenstein is the highest and Scheibenberg the lowest, with Pöhlberg in between.

Hiking routes and destinations in different directions

The Firstenweg offers two different directions to explore. From Sehma, you can hike south to Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal or north to Frohnauer Hammer. Sehmaer Höhe, between Walthersdorf and Sehma, is another starting point for hikes, walks, and bike rides. Existing cycling and hiking trails provide access to tourist destinations in the region. Alongside the specific destinations on the Firstenweg, you can choose from several ways to get around.

On the hike from Sehma to the Firstenweg, you follow part of the fully signposted Stoneman Miriquidi mountain bike route until you reach the Firstenweg. Check the signs and trail conditions locally. The Erzgebirgsbahn takes you to Sehma station, from where you can reach the hiking route from Sehma to the Forsthaus in Buchholzer Wald. If you plan to travel this way, check the timetable before your trip.

The municipality of Sehmatal has a well-developed, signposted network for hiking, cycling, and ski touring. Routes connect the municipality with Oberwiesenthal and Annaberg. The Kammweg quality hiking trail continues from the Eastern Ore Mountains into the Vogtland; circular trails take you through meadows and forests around the villages. These options cover the wider municipal area and add more outdoor activities to the specific destinations around Sehma.

Churches and Erzgebirge craft traditions

St. Paul’s Church in Sehma was built in 1898/99, and its interior is a typical example of an Art Nouveau church. It also features rare Art Nouveau murals. Christ Church offers a different perspective: it was built; its dedication took place on February 12, 1922. Designed as a functional building, it incorporates some Art Nouveau elements. The comparison shows two distinct architectural expressions: typical Art Nouveau design in the interior of St. Paul’s Church, and individual stylistic references at Christ Church.

Lace-making and woodcarving are also part of the area’s cultural heritage. These Erzgebirge craft traditions are still kept alive in Sehma’s clubs and passed on to younger generations. Alongside the buildings, these traditional crafts offer another distinct focus for planning your trip.
