Neudorf combines a distinctive high-altitude setting with plenty to interest nature and culture enthusiasts. The village stretches along the Sehma stream at an elevation of 600 to 800 m and is one of the highest forest-strip villages in the Ore Mountains. When planning your trip, you can explore both the surrounding countryside and the village’s history and seasonal traditions.
Countryside and trails
Neudorf is surrounded by the largest contiguous forest area in the Ore Mountains, which is crossed only by hiking trails and forest roads. The village is an ideal starting point for hiking, cycling and ski tours in the Fichtelberg area and the nature park.
The Bimmelbahn Adventure Trail is a hiking route that runs parallel to the Fichtelberg Railway and passes through Neudorf. The circular hike “To the Roof of Saxony” follows a different route: it starts and ends at a car park opposite the church in Sehmatal-Neudorf. The Adventure Trail is defined by its location alongside the railway, while the circular hike has a clearly designated start and finish.
There is also a direct connection to a ride on the Fichtelberg Railway: it runs from Cranzahl to Kurort Oberwiesenthal and stops at Neudorf station. Check the current timetable when planning your trip.
Church and Soup Museum
Neudorf’s village church was built in 1599. The church’s oldest and most valuable work of art is a Crucifixion group by Peter Breuer, dating from 1567.
The Neudorf Soup Museum, Germany’s only soup museum, also houses the district’s tourist information office. There, you can get advice and help arranging excursions, information about leisure activities, tourist information and maps, souvenirs, and tickets for selected events. Comprehensive tourist advice throughout your stay is also available.
Workshop, walk and seasonal events
At “Zum Weihrichkarzl,” you can make your own “Weihrichkarzle” after registering in advance. You can add a fragrance of your choice to the dough. There is also a short guided tour of the demonstration workshop, offering a brief look at tin pressing; availability depends on the stated visitor arrangements.
There is a foot-wading pool on Wiesenweg in the Neudorf district. It can be combined with a walk as a short outdoor wellness activity.
On Advent Saturdays, a tower brass performance takes place at 6 pm in front of Neudorf Church; the exact programme may vary. The Soup Country fair takes place in Neudorf in October and includes, among other things, the election of a soup king or queen and a competition to find the master soup-pot puller. The traditional Christmas event “Lichtlohmd” takes place in the Neudorf district in December. The exact dates of the fair and “Lichtlohmd” may vary; check them for your travel year before planning your accommodation around them.
