The listed Schocken department store in Chemnitz opened on 15 May 1930. Today, the building houses the State Museum of Archaeology Chemnitz, known as smac. The building thus brings together the history of a department store and archaeology: across three floors, the museum presents more than 6,000 exhibits on human history, from the Palaeolithic to the early industrial age.

Art and architecture in the urban landscape

The Schocken department store building was constructed to designs by Erich Mendelsohn. Elsewhere, too, architecture and art offer ways to explore Chemnitz. Henry van de Velde designed Villa Esche in 1903 for the family of a Chemnitz textile manufacturer; it is considered a monument of European significance. Today, it houses Germany’s first Henry van de Velde Museum, as well as a permanent exhibition about his work. Kaßberg is one of Europe’s largest contiguous districts of Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau architecture, offering another perspective on the city’s architectural history.

The Chemnitz Art Collections preserve around 70,000 objects dating from the 4th to the 21st century. The collection includes more than 200 sculptures by French and German sculptors. These collections offer a different temporal and artistic perspective from the smac: the period covered by the collections spans many centuries, while the archaeological museum presents human history up to the early industrial age.

In the wider region, the permanent PURPLE PATH connects Chemnitz with its cultural region through public art. The open-air contemporary art exhibition includes works by more than 60 artists; individual artworks may change. The PURPLE PATH circular route is 8.64 kilometres long and designated as an easy circular walking trail. It starts in Chemnitz’s market square and passes St. Jakobi Church, the Town Hall, the Red Tower, the Karl Marx Monument and Theaterplatz. This defined loop offers a way to explore the city on foot, while the wider PURPLE PATH takes visitors beyond Chemnitz.

Green spaces and seasonal experiences

Chemnitz Botanical Garden covers 12 hectares and brings together the botanical garden, the school biology centre and the nature conservation centre. Another green setting is KĂĽchwald Park: the Chemnitz Park Railway has been running through the park on a 600-millimetre narrow-gauge railway since 1954. Its loop is 2.3 kilometres long. The stated track gauge and route length make this a distinctive way to combine a park visit with a short train ride.

Also set in the woods, Küchwaldbühne is an open-air theatre designed as an amphitheatre. Each season, Küchwaldbühne e.V. stages its own children’s plays there. The programme is therefore seasonal; if you would like to combine your visit with a performance, check the specific show dates.

Industrial history and routes by the water

The Chemnitz Industrial Museum presents significant milestones from three centuries of industrial history. Its exhibits include a single-cylinder counter-pressure steam engine dating from 1896, which is demonstrated on selected days. If you would like to see the demonstration, check in advance which days it takes place; the machine is not described as being demonstrated daily.

For a different perspective, the Chemnitztal Cycle Route leads from Chemnitz city centre into the Chemnitz valley and follows the Chemnitz River for about 24 kilometres to Diethensdorf. It begins where the Zwönitz and Würschnitz rivers meet to form the Chemnitz, in the Altchemnitz district. The route is still being developed beyond its current section. This is relevant when planning a longer bike ride: the route described and its development status go hand in hand.

Klaffenbach Moated Castle offers another distinctive setting. Surrounded by a moat, it stands in parkland with an adjacent courtyard. Changing exhibitions, concerts and artists’ studios shape its cultural programme; individual offerings may vary. Together, museums, architecture, walking routes and green spaces show Chemnitz as a destination that can be explored in different ways, depending on your interests.
