Explore Bad Lauchstädt through its historic spa facilities and theater history. The Goethe Theatre continues to be used in accordance with its original purpose; guided park tours, museums and a Renaissance castle that can be viewed from the outside reveal other facets of the town. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between permanent historic features and seasonal offerings.

Theater History and Performance Season

The Goethe Theatre opened on June 26, 1802; its plans were drawn up by Berlin architect Heinrich Gentz. It is considered the only theater building from the Goethe era in Germany to have survived in its original state. Its history is not just a thing of the past: the venue continues to be used in accordance with its original purpose. Guest performances take place mainly on weekends between May and October. As the seasonal program may change, it is advisable to check the latest dates if you are planning to attend a performance.

The visitor center in the park provides information about tourist activities, concerts, guest performances and guided tours. You can also get tickets there for the Goethe Theatre and the historic Kursaal, as well as souvenirs. This gives you the opportunity to find out about various cultural activities on site and decide which ones suit your stay.

Spa Facilities, Castle and Museums

A spring was discovered on the site of today’s spa park in 1704. Architect Johann Wilhelm Chryselius was commissioned to draw up a master plan for Bad Lauchstädt’s historic spa facilities. The discovery of the spring marks a specific point in the park’s history; the commission refers to the design of the facilities.

The Renaissance castle is a listed historic building and is located next to the historic spa park. It can be viewed from the outside; the interior is not open to visitors. This restriction is important when planning your visit: the castle is to be viewed from the outside, not toured inside.

The New Schiller House features exhibitions on more than two hundred years of theater history in Bad Lauchstädt and includes a historic Schiller room. The Douche Pavilion houses a museum about the history of the mineral spa that is open to visitors. The two buildings offer different perspectives: the Schiller House focuses on theater history, while the Douche Pavilion explores the history of the mineral spa.

Guided Tours and Seasonal Activities

A seasonal park tour includes Bad Lauchstädt Spa Park and the castle moat, as well as a view of the Herzog Pavilion. From May to September, a walk themed around Christiane Vulpius through the spa grounds in Lauchstädt is also offered. If either of these activities is a deciding factor for your trip, check the specific dates in advance. Guided tours can also be arranged in English with advance notice.

One guided tour covers the accessible historic spa facilities, the Goethe Theatre and the permanent exhibitions at the Douche Pavilion and the New Schiller House. Access to the theater may be limited depending on the performance schedule. This tour offers a way to explore the outdoor areas and several cultural and historical sites as part of a single program; the performance schedule remains an important factor when planning a theater visit.
