Krosigk combines the history of its castle and village with two distinct mills and a striking landscape. The castle, village church and watermill represent different historical chapters; cycling routes include the village as a main destination, a detour or a stop along the way. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between focusing on local history and following a longer route.

Castle, Church and Local History

Krosigk Castle was originally a moated castle. Its keep was probably built as a defensive tower in the 9th century; the castle was first mentioned in a document in 927 under the name “castrum croszok”. The presumed construction date of the tower and the castle’s first documented mention thus represent two distinct historical moments.

Construction of the village church began in 1152 on a hill above the village. In 1729, the dovecote tower on the parish grounds was built as a “monument of gratitude” by “faithful souls”. The local history room in Fleischergasse is the local history museum of the Krosigk Cultural and Heritage Association (Kultur- und Heimatverein Krosigk e. V.). Together, these places offer different ways to explore the village’s history, from church construction to local heritage work.

Two Mills, Different Stories

The Krosigk post mill was brought to Krosigk from Gollma in 1995. A storm destroyed it in 2007; it was rebuilt by 2010. Its history is therefore also shaped by relocation and reconstruction. The watermill offers a different kind of visit: it is used as an excursion restaurant and museum.

The watermill’s new waterwheel was officially put into operation on June 9, 2025. If the waterwheel is important to your plans, check its current operating status in advance. This keeps its lasting historical significance separate from the question of whether it is operating today.

Landscape and Activities at the Mill Pond

The Windmill Hill near Krosigk is a distinctive porphyry hill in an intensively farmed landscape. Around Krosigk and Kaltenmark, south-facing semi-dry grasslands provide habitats for grasshoppers, ground beetles, wild bees and butterflies. These features of the landscape complement the history of the buildings with a look at the surrounding area and its habitats.

The mill pond has a spacious, well-maintained green area with a barbecue area, playgrounds, a Kneipp facility, an orchard and art. If you are planning to use a specific facility, check its current condition before your visit. The Horchen recreation area includes a fitness trail by the large oak tree in the direction of the watermill. Information boards at the mill pond show walkers, hikers and cycling tourists ways to explore the region.

Cycling Routes of Different Lengths

Cycling options vary both in length and in the role Krosigk plays on the route. The approximately 20-kilometre half-day tour “Around the Petersberg” has the castle complex and fortified church in Krosigk as its main destination. The approximately 60-kilometre Wettin West Route includes the castle complex and fortified church as a detour. The 92.98-kilometre “Saalekreis Northwest in One Day” circular cycle route also passes through Krosigk as a stop along the way.

Krosigk is the focus of the half-day tour; on the two longer routes, it is a detour or a stop along the way. This distinction can help you choose a tour based on your preferred length and focus, without treating the three routes as equivalent round trips.
