Three topics are particularly useful for understanding Schochwitz: the building history of St. Benedict’s Village Church and Schochwitz Castle, the castle park, and the landscape that defines the town. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus mainly on historic building phases, features of the park or the surrounding countryside.

Church and castle: different building phases

The foundation stone of St. Benedict’s Village Church was laid in 1256. Its Romanesque nave and the later addition of a Gothic-style apse bring together two distinct building phases. An apse is an architectural feature that forms the end of a church interior; here, it was added after the Romanesque nave. Visitors interested in architecture can thus see two styles and their chronological sequence within a single building.

Schochwitz Castle originated as a moated castle in the 12th century. The present-day castle was built between 1601 and 1606, incorporating the older castle complex. Compared with the church, it follows a different timeline: the laying of the foundation stone in 1256 is a clear reference point for St. Benedict’s, while the castle’s medieval origins and the later construction phase of the present-day castle stand side by side. The town’s history can therefore be considered through different questions—either the foundation stone of the church or the transformation of a moated castle into a castle.

Castle Park and Bat Night

The publicly accessible castle park has a pond, a playground and a small nature trail. The park offers a variety of features: water, play and nature. In addition, the Naturwerkstatt e.V. association offers recreational activities for children and adults. The park’s features and the association’s offerings are separate aspects to consider when choosing suitable activities.

Schochwitz traditionally hosts the international Bat Night on the last weekend in August. At a Batnight event in Schochwitz, mist nets were set up in the castle park. From 6 to 7 p.m., visitors could learn about bats in Saxony-Anhalt and moths as their food source at an information stand; children did arts and crafts and played. The event described thus combines information about bats and moths with activities for children. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the dates in advance.

Landscape and character of the town

Schochwitz lies within the Laweketal Landscape Protection Area and the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park. The landscape is hilly and predominantly agricultural; the town is also characterised by peace and quiet, nature and little traffic noise. The townscape is shaped in part by the romantically wild Luppholz woodland. These landscape features offer a different focus from the building history of the church and castle: they draw attention to the surrounding area and its protected landscape. If nature and a quieter setting are important to your travel plans, you can weigh these aspects alongside the town’s cultural attractions.
