Mörsbach can be explored through its local history, private village museum and the landscape of the Kroppach Switzerland. The Mörsbach rises in Obermörsbach and flows towards the Große Nister. The stream, local heritage and hiking options offer different ways to enjoy a stay without prescribing a set itinerary.

Local History and Village Museum

Mörsbach was first mentioned in 1335 as “Mersbach.” That same year, with the consent of all the heirs, the estates of Mersbach were transferred to the abbot and convent of Marienstatt Abbey. The Mörsbach Village Museum is a private museum owned by the Wirdeier family. Its exhibition explores living, life and work in the Westerwald; most of the collection consists of regional finds. Visits can be arranged by phone. Please agree on the details in advance.

Landscape and Hiking Trails

Mörsbach is part of the Kroppach Switzerland Landscape Protection Area; the municipal forest covers about a quarter of the municipality. Around Mörsbach, the Kroppach Switzerland offers wooded slopes, quiet river valleys, viewpoints overlooking the Nister Valley, and numerous hiking and cycling trails. The landscape combines forest and valley views with opportunities to explore on foot or by bike. A local circular hiking trail is one specific option if you would like to plan a continuous loop.

Hiking Car Parks and Planning

The municipality lists four hiking car parks: at the community centre, at the cemetery car park in Burbach, at the Brunken hiking car park and in Obermörsbach. The community centre has free parking for about twelve vehicles. Capacity and access information may change; check before setting out. These locations offer different starting points for planning a tour. Choose your starting point based on the hike you want to take.

More Ways to Explore the Westerwald

The Westerwald has long-distance hiking trails with clearly defined stages: the WesterwaldSteig is a 235-kilometre long-distance trail with 16 stages. Check the current route planner before making plans. The Druidensteig runs for 94 kilometres in seven day stages through seven river valleys and has more than 30 geo-information points. Its interpretive infrastructure may change over time. Mörsbach’s local circular hiking trail and these regional stage trails offer different scales of planning.

In the Westerwald, Stöffel Park is a former basalt quarry covering around 140 hectares, bringing together industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel Park displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel Mouse”; together, they document around 25 million years of geological history.

Another cultural highlight in the Westerwald is Hachenburg’s historic town centre: restored half-timbered houses shape the area around the Alter Markt; the Löwenbrunnen fountain is also part of its historic character. The Westerwald Ceramics Museum explores the history of working with clay. Most of the objects on display originated in a Westerwald clay pit.
