The Wäller Tour “Bachgeflüster” shapes Atzelgift’s hiking profile. The certified route leads through the landscape around Atzelgift and links streams, woodland, viewpoints and cultural and historical sites, including the Ehrenhain near Atzelgift. Options include routes of approximately 16 and approximately 10 kilometres, as well as a family-friendly option. Along the way, 14 audio guide stops add explanatory commentary to the hike. The tour officially opened in June 2026. Check availability and route details before your trip.

Mill history and natural highlights in Atzelgift

The Atzelgift Mill adds a technical and historical perspective to the hiking landscape. The residential building dates from 1908; the brick mill building was rebuilt after a fire in 1949. The mill operated until 1965, while hydropower continues to generate electricity. This makes it possible to distinguish the former milling operation from the ongoing electricity generation.

The Heuzeroth Linden Tree on Marienstätter Straße is a remarkable natural monument in Atzelgift. It offers hikers and nature enthusiasts a peaceful place for a short break. The Atzelgift Forest Chapel is also considered a quiet spot for hikers and visitors. The simple half-timbered chapel was built in 1996 to mark the village’s 600th anniversary. An entrance to the Adolf-Erzstollen mine was once located nearby. The natural monument, chapel and mill site each offer a different focus: a short nature break, quiet contemplation and local history.

More hiking and nature highlights in the Westerwald

For a longer hiking experience, the WesterwaldSteig in the Westerwald is a long-distance trail stretching 235 kilometres and divided into 16 stages. It is certified as a “Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland” and is one of the “Top Trails of Germany.” Check the current route planner and certification status before planning your trip. The Druidensteig also runs through the Westerwald, covering 94 kilometres in seven day stages through seven river valleys. More than 30 geo-information points complement the route. As the interpretive features may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before planning. The Holzbach Gorge in the Westerwald is a breakthrough valley about one kilometre long, with basalt walls up to 30 metres high.

Geology and craftsmanship in the Westerwald

The Stöffel Park in the Westerwald covers around 140 hectares on the site of a former basalt quarry and combines industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM features a fossil exhibition, including the famous “Stöffel mouse”; the fossils document around 25 million years of Earth’s history. The Westerwald Ceramics Museum offers a different focus, presenting the history of working with clay. Most of the objects on display come from a Westerwald clay pit. Visitors can get creative themselves in the well-equipped museum workshop under expert guidance. Check the workshop programme and booking conditions before your trip.
